Castle of Vila Viçosa

Very well preserved medieval castle and walls, with a nice view of Vila Viçosa. Inside the walls you'll find nice green area to walk, old cemetery and church, a castle open for visiting. Here was the home of one of the most influential portuguese families. Definitely worth a visit a visit if you're in the region.

Beautiful castelo with resourceful museum, cozy small town with good restaurants. There is an interesting palace too and all are very nearby to Spanish border.

Interesting museum with friendly helpful staff. Ancient roman artifacts are very good but sometimes displayed rather dimly. The hunting weapons collection is superb but not to everyone's taste. The trophy displays not only include some mind-numbling examples of the worst form of the art; but also prove the damage that can be caused by over privileged royal families can do when let loose on African wildlife. If you're in the area well worth the entry fee not just for the collections on display, the excellent view from the ramparts but the fact that in 35 degrees it's deliciously cool within its heavy stone walls ;)

Very well refurbished monument with nice hunting museum and panoramic view over the city of Vila Viçosa

I love castles in general and have visited a number of them in Portugal. I enjoyed Vila Viçosa. It appears to have been a very large castle at one time, in terms of area, judging by what seems to have been done with the space inside. There is a huge church with cemetery. There are also several small houses and a couple of narrow streets. I have seen cemeteries inside of castles, but not houses and streets.
What is a bit lamentable is that the castle inside the walls has gotten somewhat seedy, and some parts (such as stairs to the castle ramparts or walls are partly broken, although it seems it was repaired at one time [needs a lot of work now]). I still think the castle is a romantic place.

Medieval castle and renaissance fortress worth to take a look. Has a hunting museum, disregard that, in this day and age it's just stupid.

Local obrigatório para visitar em Vila Viçosa. Dentro da torre principal funciona o museu da caça e arqueologia. Por 5€ por adulto podemos visitar ambas as exposições. Crianças até aos 12 anos não pagam. Excelente vista sobre Vila Viçosa no terraço.

Erguido em 1297 por ordem e desejo de D. Dinis, ter um castelo relativamente rasteiro traz várias vantagens, tanto ao nível de acessos pedonais como pela proximidade com o centro histórico.
É o que acontece neste castelo, situado naquela que é chamada de “princesa do Alentejo”.

"​No centro de Vila Viçosa ergue-se altaneiro o castelo medieval, mandado edificar por D. Dinis na última década do século XIII.

De 1461, quando D. Fernando I recebeu a cadeira ducal, até à inauguração do Palácio Ducal, este monumento nacional foi residência dos Bragança.

A velha fortaleza medieval conservou a sua traça até ao início do século XVI quando os duques D. Jaime I e D. Teodósio I construíram, seguindo os modelos italianos de praças ultramarinas, o resistente castelo artilheiro.

A reestruturação do castelo, na época das Guerras da Restauração, ficou a dever-se à posição estratégica que a Vila detinha em relação a Castela."

Muito bonito! No meio da cidade e no baixo.

O castelo de Vila Viçosa alberga o museu de Arqueologia (no rés do chão) e o museu da caça (no primeiro andar). É também possível disfrutar de uma vista panorâmica sobre a cidade. Confesso que estava um pouco cético, mas a equipa do museu é extremamente amável e atenta. Ambos os museus são muito interessantes e permitem uma verdadeira viagem no tempo. A entrada é acessível e é possível fotografar no interior. Vale a visita!

Agradavel espaço para passear a qualquer hora do dia, até à noite mas infelizmente não tem bancos para se poder sentar no espaço verde nem lampiões para um passeio após o por do sol no espaço verde. Deveria haver mais segurança nas escadas e nas muralhas.
