My travel group (7 people) did a tour. The presentation on the traditional weaving skills was so interesting and informative- they covered all steps from shearing, spinning, dying and weaving. Our tour facilitator, Carmela was very informative and lovely to spend a day with. I love the goals of the program and you could tell that the women had been practicing the presentation.

As a bonus, our lunch was really delicious!

Not a complaint but the one comment from a family member- if you are not able to easily walk or climb stairs this tour may be a little difficult.

Please consider this a 5 star rating multiplied by 7 :)

Had a wonderful time during the overnight tour at Huilloc Alto with Awamaki. Great food, amazing views, and a memorable time with the indigenous women as our guides. Love their fair trade store in town, they have amazing hand made textiles made into unique and practical products.

I loved shopping here! Everything here is fair trade and the money goes to supporting the crafts women and teaching them to be entrepreneurs. You pay for what the work is really worth and it's all genuine materials like alpaca and sheep wool unlike the other places that sell you synthetic products and tell you it's baby alpaca.
People working here are usually from the US so they speak English and can give you lots of great advice about the town!

The Awamaki store offers beautifully hand woven items by beautiful women living in the communities above Ollantaytambo and the surrounding areas. Awamaki is non-profit so most of the people working in the store are volunteers and do not make any money for their time and effort. What these volunteers do gain, is a chance to get to know the women making these beautiful items and understand the culture and community of the area.

To say this store is not representing the local people is showing a lack of knowledge of what Awamaki is. Awamaki supports the women of local communities and helps them sell their items for their true value with the plan to help the women, eventually sell items directly on their own.

Being a non-profit, one could say Awamaki supports the local women more than other stores as they only take what is needed, and the rest goes back directly to the women.

Take a tour with Awamaki and you can buy directly from the women who made the garmet you buy. The profit goes directly to her. And you get to meet and spend time with these beautiful ladies. An experience you won’t soon forget.

Great place to find ethically sourced, genuine alpaca products. Awamaki works with local weaving communities and helps women in those communities build businesses that benefit their families and communities. Purchases in the store go to support their cause.

Beautiful creations, solid mission. I will definitely return. I do wish they were a bit more transparent though about how much the women make off their handwork.

It's run by an NGO that sends the profits back to the nearby villages. If you are going to buy souvenirs, why not spend your soles here?
