The hike is not the easiest one but it's definitely worth the effort. Make sure to take and use UV protection 😅

Long hike but beautiful! The hike usually is listed as 10.5 miles round trip from the plaza in ollyantaytambo, but my pedometer said nearly 15, fyi. Go early, weather changes at midday.

Beautiful but quite hard hike. Be prepared for the whole day adventure(up to 7h). I recommend starting super early so it's not too hot because there's not much shade along the trail.
It might be lots of people on the weekend. We went on Sunday and it was a group of 20 people there and it as hard to take any photos.
Take lots of water (2L min per person) and snacks. Bring sunscreen - it's super hot during the day.

As an elopement and wedding photographers we recommend this place due to their view. If you like hiking you’ll love this place. From there you can have an incredible view of the Sacred Valley and the Apu Veronica. Some of our couple elope there and was something indescriptible!

After a hard and long climb, you can enjoy this wonderful place with spectacular views. I live at sea level and started preparing for this hike a few weeks before my flight, but unfortunately hurt my left knee 2 weeks before the trip. With knee compression sleeves and long hiker socks, I managed the climb in 5 hours, I think average fitness people can manage this trek after getting acclimated.

Such a neat walk up from Ollantaytambo, take the old bridge over the river just outside the city to get to the trail head. You can walk up to the top in as fast as a hour and a half but 3 hours is more of the average pace. There is no water at the top so be sure and bring lots, this a place to get water a third of the way up but that's the only place. Once at the top you can see off both sides to the valley up and down as well as several mountain tops.

Just wow! This in a difficult climb of around 1100 metres. Best to take a tuk tuk from Ollantaytambo to the trail head. Haggle for a 5 soles ride. The climb up at a fast pace is around 2.5-3 hours. We were told by an experienced hiker it would take 3.5 hours and we’re not experienced and did it in 2.5 (although we’re pretty healthy and we lost the trail a little near some ruins and took a short cut). Very leisurely would be 3.5-4.5 hours. The way down is much quicker. Around 1.5 hours going relatively fast. You can then walk back to town which takes about an hour or try hailing a tuk tuk from the high road. The views at the top are breathtaking and this was one of the best free hikes without a guide we did in Peru. Highly recommend!! Note on the trail. Stick to what looks like a path. Once your about 30 mins from the top the trail becomes a little less clear and you’ll see a house of some kind and may come across some small plantations/ crops. Go past the crops (so they’re on your left) and you’ll come to these other ruins that are marked earlier on the trail. You’ll then see some old inks ruins and find the train again to the Sun Gate. If in doubt look toward the such gate, you’ll see sign at the top of the mountain and you’ll be able to make out a dark line of high runs down from the sign. That’s the path and you can always do what we did and cut across the steep hills side to get to it. Good luck!

Wow, magical place! I went there very early in the morning and was alone the whole time, it’s still a secret gem. It took me 4 hours from Ollantaytambo, but I guess the biggest struggle was the altitude. The paths are very good, stable, safe, but still a bit adventurous. The direction is clear, there's some signs on the way as well. The views are insane. Let’s go, what are you waiting for!

Amazing trail leading to even more spectacular place. If you are lucky you can see the peak of Veronica Nevada covered in snow. Definitely recommended.

it's a very demanding trek, 4 hours if you're not used to trekking, two and a half hours to come back, bring water, cereal/fruits and raincoat if it's rainy season.

we went on a cloudy day which helped with fatigue but limited the views. However it was still a worthwhile hike. The top, although frigid, rainy, and windy, offered an amazing experience.

Took 7 hours. Start early and get there midday. Pack a snack and plenty of water. Consider taking the canteras trail too to maximize views along the hike.

Moderate to hard trek but totally worth it. Inca gate that looks over Apu Veronica, will have to come back and hope for a sunny day but it was stunning regardless.

THIS TREK IS NOT FOR ANYONE OTHER THAN EXPERIENCED HIKERS. YOU CANNOT RIDE HORSEBACK TO SUNGATE AS ADVERTISED BY MANY TOUR GROUPS. I am an athletic person. This kicked my a$$.
