Sun Gate

What a great place to visit. My brother has dreamt of coming here since he was a small skinny child. Sadly when we got here there was a strange whiff of what smelt of human plop. Luckily it didn't ruin the experience and we has a spiffing time. Hopefully on my next visit to a wonder there isn't a rough smell to deal with.

My husband and I eloped here, and Intipunku is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to! Truly a magical place that overlooks gorgeous views including the Apú Veronica, and several small ciudads. I would go a million times over.

Amazing experience at the Mcchu Pichu sun gate. After an early morning hike of about 3 hours, the amazing first views of the Machu Pichu citadel are visible from here. The tiredness and limb soreness all disappear as the views of the citadel become clearer in the distance.

Actually a beautiful place. We just couldn't see anything because of the fog. It would have been incredibly beautiful with a view. But then we were able to look back from MP and see the Sun Gate.
I can't say whether the walk from MP to Sun Gate is worthwhile.

It's a very nice hiking tour to the sun gate and a perfect view on Machu Picchu in the mountains.

Seeing Machu Picchu from the sun gate is an amazing reward for finishing the Inca trail.

About an hour's hike from Machu Picchu - well worth it if you have the time! Fantastic views of the citadel, especially around sunrise or sunset. Be aware that it closes around 4pm though, so if you cannot start hiking by 230-3, it may not be worthwhile.

The relief and joy felt when reaching the sun gate is great.

Personally I found this place more impressive than the little hill top city of Machu Picchu. It’s subjective though. Be prepared for a moderate hike though.

Only reachable by walking the Inca trail

Sun gate is a nice hike up to the "original" entrance to Machu Picchu. It is about 1.2 miles and has an elevation gain of about 950 feet. It requires a second 1/2 day pass because the hike will take a couple hours. Insider tip , no one will kick you out of the area if you only have one pass. Their control system is biological (no restrooms inside the park, just outside the entrance gate). I do recommend the hike. We did buy 2 passes, so we could support the community.

One of the most thrilling views on all of the Inca Trail. It's your first sign that you've "made it!" You breathe a sigh of relief and relax a moment. It's such a moment. Highly recommend approaching Machu Picchu this way!

This is a labour of love. The hike to this spot is insane but all the travelers are friendly and let you know when you're getting close. The view is well with it though. Truly stunning!

This is the one free hike to see the citadel from afar. The other two mountain hikes have a fee and are very difficult for those not active. It took us 45 minutes there, and the same back. Beautiful views and not overly strenuous. This is something you should do on your visit.

The moment to finally climb over the top after 4 days trekking is the most rewarding and powerful thing I've ever felt. So beautiful and the trek was totally worth every ache and pain it took to get there

The view from this point of Macchu Pichhu is unreal, especially after the 10k Inca trail walk. I would recommend to be at the sun gate to see the sunset, and the next day try and be inside Macchu Picchu for the beautiful view of the sun rise through the sun gate.

I first saw intipunku from Ollantaytambo. The sun gate rose from the clouds as the sun set behind, a breathtaking view of the mountaintops. The next day I made it to the sun gate, a magnificent entrance to Machu Picchu.

Aaaaaaaaah, the Sun Gate. After the tour of Machu Picchu we all had some free time to chill. I decided to hike up to the Sun Gate 💪
What a GORGEOUS VIEW!!! I didn't know this at the time, compared to Rainbow Mountain, this was a snap! What was most intriguing was the guard at the gate. He was there to make sure you didn't take the other Inca trail 😳. I would have loved to, however that's another trip.

When hiking the Inka trail this is where you’ll get your first view of Machu Picchu. And what a fantastic view this is. Make all the effort worth it. You can also reach it in about 30min coming from Machu Picchu itself.
