Must see! So impressive monument, in a beautiful park. It transmits a feeling of injustice at the same time that praises freedom.

A beautiful memorial made of waste metals.I personally think it’s worth a visit. It makes you stop for a second and just stare. An important part of history, which i find commendable for the dutch to put up.It’s simply a monument that you don’t need to spare time for; you can pass by it on your walk in the park.

Absolutely beautiful sculpture. Three stages to view separately and as a whole.
No tickets needed. In the middle of a free park. Disappointing to see so many people just brush past without even a glance. But I enjoyed sitting nearby and looking at it from all angles.

Keti Koti took place in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam today 01/07 in the afternoon, the annual official commemoration and celebration of the abolition of Dutch transatlantic slavery in Suriname and the Caribbean. Among others, Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema and Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven (Education, Culture and Science) gave speeches, as did Linda Nooitmeer, chair of the National Institute for Dutch Slavery History and Legacy (NiNsee). Because of the corona measures, no festival took place around the commemoration this year, and there was only room for a limited number of people present. I have been there after that the official ceremony was finished. It was amazing to see how the photojournalists were creating the visuals for the news item!

The Slavernijmonument is a monument commemorating the official abolishment in the Netherlands and it's empire. The sculptural ensemble is a narrative of freedom from the despair of slavery to the elation of freedom. A wonderful monument that brought a tear to my eyes.

There are still people living and working in slavery, we need to remember that times can shift and not asume that civilization moves forward. We always need to stand up for freedom and fight for human rights. We can do this by looking into history and take lessons from the past. #slavery
