I needed a replacement gear cable after mine snapped on a cycle tour. The friendly staff made an effort to turn the bike around that afternoon so that I could continue as planned, which I really appreciate, and I also valued the use of a rental bike to get around in the meantime. At the time I felt as though it was quite pricey (35 EUR) but I figured that's what you had to pay in central Amsterdam and took in to account the loan bike. *However* I had to have the gears re-indexed upon returning to the UK. The local shop pointed out that the replacement cable had already frayed because it hadn't been properly fitted with a ferrule. Maybe Dutch bike shops aren't used to derailleur gears - but for comparison, the second replacement cable and re-index back in the UK cost less than 15 EUR. (Also worth noting that the shop in the UK did the second replacement whilst I waited in less than 10 minutes).
