I enjoyed my experience, the museum has over four hundred thousand interesting art exhibits and body of works, it is worth your time and a good place to add as a tourist destination. The truth is that you cannot use one day visit to view the entire museum exhibits. So I suggest you plan more visit. It is a place to go spend time and have a fascinating time with family or friends.

I was amazed at the so many art collections and body of works, but what intrigued me the most was finding that a serious question that has always plaque me was posed, "when can we say culture is stolen (paraphrased)?" This question was borne out of the sheer need to understand how countries or individuals borrow indigenous arts, culture, technology etc, internalize it and then profit of it. You can find this body of works on the 1st floor.

A great museum covering the Netherlands colonial past and going in deep other cultures. When I went there I felt it was well curated allowing the exhibitions to cater to most interested. Some parts of the exhibition were exceptionally designed with interactive aspects to it making it engaging.

Free audio guides are available.

The museum is quite impressive, and the exhibits that were there when I visited were so interesting. The museum does a good job taking accountability for the past colonial sins of the Netherlands and acknowledges the history of the country’s involvement in Indonesia and Suriname. There are plenty of cultural pieces from these former colonies as well as interesting temporary exhibitions.

Visiting the Tropenmuseum was an unforgettable experience that left me in awe of the rich tapestry of cultures and histories that make up our world. From the moment I stepped through its doors, I was transported on a journey through time and space. The highlight of my visit was the captivating Chinese New Year show, which brought to life the vibrant traditions and customs of this ancient celebration.

As I wandered through the museum's halls, I was struck by the meticulous attention to detail in the photos and documents that chronicled the history of various cultures. Each exhibit was a testament to the dedication and passion of the curators, who had painstakingly curated a collection that was both educational and inspiring.

One of the most memorable moments of my visit was when I stumbled upon a section dedicated to the history of Chinese immigrants in the Netherlands. Through photographs, artifacts, and personal stories, I gained a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs of this community, which has played such an integral role in shaping Dutch society.

Overall, my experience at the Tropenmuseum was nothing short of magical. It was a journey of discovery and enlightenment that left me with a newfound appreciation for the diversity and richness of our world. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone seeking to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the human experience.

Interesting museum, even for me, an American. Colonialism was honestly presented to museum goers. It was a challenge to learn about the ways the Dutch colonized parts of the world, especially the their contributions to enslaving people.

An excellent museum with exhibitions that matter! 🤩
I could see that they really thought through their curation and storytelling.

For those who want to stay in their colonial comfort zone, however, this museum might be “confronting”. 😉

(Yet all the more recommended for such folks!)

Today was such a great day for our family at the Tropenmuseum. As soon as we walked in, we knew it was going to be fun and interesting. The kids loved the exhibits and hands-on stuff.

The best part was the tour of Sabi Suriname. It felt like we were really diving into Surinamese culture. The guide was so cool, telling us stories that made history come alive for everyone.

But the real highlight was the museum restaurant. After a busy day, the food was amazing, and the atmosphere was super cozy.

The restaurant was the perfect end to our museum trip. We had a great time talking about everything we saw. Mixing culture, learning, and good food made our day at the Tropenmuseum something we'll always remember.

I highly recommend visiting this beautiful museum to see the current exhibition, "Someone is getting rich". Powerful and important the exhibition is a collection of works by contemporary artists on the theme of the history of finance and it’s evolution from colonialism to the current system with the challenges facing our world today. More of a "must see" than Vermeer!

A wonderful museum with interesting temporary exhibitions and a very interesting main exhibition that makes you think about colonialism and other phenomena in the world around us and our history. A lot of interesting objects and videos/audios, I spent here probably 4 hours, and I still had a shortage. In addition, there is a small but interesting shop and a nice cafe where you can have a snack while sightseeing. I started sightseeing in the morning, so despite Sunday it wasn't crowded.

WOW! The Exhibit on getting rich was wonderfully done. I also enjoyed learning about colonization and well as pilfering and then the music room. So much to enjoy. Be sure to walk over to the slave monument in Oosterpark while you let the art soak in.

This is a fantastic museum where you can learn about the colonial past/inheritance of Netherlands, specifically how today’s wealth is linked with slavery from a very honest point of view, which makes the place unique globally. Really cool sections on cultural appropriation, and gift giving in different cultures and so on. I’ll come back! And definitely recommend the place.

What an excellent Gem of a museum! Fits in well with a trip to the Zoo and the museum of microscope matter next door.

Anyway back to the Tropenmuseum. Its an open space on 2 floors in 2 wings of an old stripped back property. Clearly used to house preserved animals in glass cabinets which in places it still does but all rearranged with thought provoking maps and charts and screens and interactive stuff.

It has a smell sensory tunnel, A seat you sit in whilst it maps your face whilst bombarding you with pictures of animals emotions.. All sorts of fun things that you cant really explain in a review.

But I will try, I would describe it as a place to go and think, be informed and entertained but most of all helped to think and change the way you think, yes that is how I would describe it.
A rewiring of your brain pathways. Its not banging on the same old topics of climate or identity crisis, although of course this is included and it cares a lot for all of humanities enclaves, but its more about the way to think about yourself in a context of stories and facts about the earth through history.

How to think about things in a different way. See!! Impossible to describe but its worth a go.

There is also a soundscape that changes all the time and is intermitent. The video is a rain scene but it could be a passing train or some human noise.

Great Museum, really enjoyed it

Interesting museum of the history of Dutch colonialism, plus other exhibits that are not permanent.
The building itself is spectacular with an enormous open atrium.
Recommended placebo visit, and when I was there (a weekend), was not too crowded.
Good value for money too. €€

It's about culture, art, clothes and fashion. The way museum interact with people is interesting. In every room there is a subject you can interact with.

Huge museum worth visiting, theme is appropriation of different nationalities and cultures, I think it is great, i truly believe that we should learn about people around the world instead of hating them or forbidding to use our culture, spreading the word, it will help authentic traditions in clothes, hairstyles and etc to live long and not be lost! you can take a break and get to the restaurant and then back to museum, i really loved Ceasar salad there and they have amazing vegeterian burger made from jackfruit which you should try! Oh and you can also buy there cool items, i personally got nice stones from there so lovely

Definitely an underrated museum. The Divas exhibition was quite unique, with a multi-media display showcasing the greatest female music and film artists in the Arab World. The exhibition redefines the word Diva, highlighting the significance of these great women on Arab culture, heritage, feminism and politics.

Not to be missed!

Beautiful museum with very interesting, contemporary exhibitions.

We loved the one about gender and Indonesia - much recommended and very entertaining and beautiful.

The building in itself is great to see too!
