Lesser known tourist spot (museum, free entry). It is the former royal residence of a prince regent (and the prince himself; later Emperor Gojong, the first Emperor of the Korean Empire) in the 19th century. It is now a smaller complex compared to its previous extent as Duksung Women's University occupies part of its grounds.

Unhyeon Palace or Unhyeongung is the least known of the Korean palaces in Seoul. However, it is a beautiful place with a very rich history.

It hosted several important events and important guests like King Kojong and Queen Myeongseong, and it was the residence of the father of King Kojong known as Daewongun.

The palace is quite small compared to the fellow palaces, but it has its unique charm.

There are often cultural activities organized here, like the traditional dance performance shared in my pictures.

You can find this palace right outside Anguk Station, so do not forget to add it to your travel list.

Unhyeongung Palace, located in Unni-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, as Seoul Metropolitan Government Historic Site No. 257, is the residence of King Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty, and the private residence of Heungseon Daewongun.

It is the cradle of Heungseon-gun Lee Ha-eung's realization of royal rule and the place where he carried out his will to reform from the position of Daewon-gun to the royal capital politics after taking power. It is a place where Daewongun continued to exert political influence at home and abroad even after he resigned from power, and because it was the place where King Gojong lived until his accession to the throne, it has a greater historical symbolism.

It was on December 9, 1863, that Heungseongun's sister-in-law came to be called Unhyeongung, when the Gyoji was issued giving Heungseongun the title of Heungseon Daewongun and his wife Min as the military wife. Unhyeonggung is also the detached palace where the wedding ceremony of King Gojong and Empress Myeongseong was held.

This place used to be a home of Gojong, 26th King of Joseon Dynasty in the late 19th century and was the house of his father, Heungseon Daewongun, who actually ran the country when the king was too young to rule.

This is a small place. Nothing much going on (except some events on weekends). But that's probably the reason you would need this place, where is so quiet and restful in the right middle of the big city. Plus, free admission.

Old beautiful royal residence for the residence of the Heungseon Daewongun, a prince regent of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty in the 19th century, and father of Emperor Gojong.
Don't forget to step in if you pass by. It is free admission.

A smaller and less known palace in Seoul, but nevertheless a very beautiful one - the large courtyards and the traditional buildings are impressive! The museum inside is also worth a visit. It is basically located in Insadong, so just a street away from the myriad of restaurants & shops there.
