Tongin traditional market was set up in 1941 to cater for the Japanese residents when Korea was under Japanese rule.

It continue to exist till today and cater for the local people and tourists. There are many stalls and shops selling food, drinks, fruits, grocery and also clothes and shoes.

It is located a little away from the city centre. It opens at 11.00am. We were there too early and there was not much activity yet.

We missed the unique system of buying lunch using yeopjeong or brass coins.

I love the coin market experience!!!
Just exchange your 10k won to 20 coins, then you can buy the foods with those coins

You still able to buy foods with cash/card as usual

Tongin Market in Jeju, explored in February, was a vibrant and bustling hub showcasing the island's culinary delights. Despite the cooler weather, the market was alive with energy and an array of local flavors. The diverse stalls offering traditional Korean street food and fresh produce provided a feast for the senses. From savory snacks to colorful fruits and local delicacies, Tongin Market was a treat for food enthusiasts. The lively atmosphere, although perhaps a bit quieter due to the season, still exuded the essence of Jeju's culinary culture, making it a delightful stop to experience authentic local cuisine.

Love this place and I love how you can choose to purchase small portions of food from different vendors with the Tongin tokens.

Nice and cute market with some street food options. There are 5-6 street food stalls, and they all provide small to medium sized portion sizes, which is perfect for trying many things. Overall, highly recommended for lunch if you are checking out things in the area!

A typical Korean traditional market that you can have different experience to taste the local food in the same street. Only 5000 won per person. People are friendly and easygoing.

Very beautiful market, where you could enjoy all the traditional delicious Korean food here without costing your arms and legs. We spent 5000w to buy 10 coins, and my partner and I walked out with terribly full and hurting stomach haha.
They gave us a bento tray to carry food, and after food shopping in the market, you can either eat the food wherever you are, or go back to the tourist centre and enjoy the food there, where they have a/c running, pretty good during summer time.
Totally a must go place.

It's different type of experience to buy food.😀. We were there early, so we spent some time walking to the bottom of Inwangsan mountain. After eating, we walked to tong-gui dong hanok village. Its worth the time.

Super good market experience. Let me explain how It works:

You change 5000 won for 10 coins, grab a tray and spend the 10 coins on all the street food stores you want. Then you go back to where you changed the coins to eat at a lunch room (with rice, soup and water if you need).

It's a perfect korean market brunch!

Very good to experience the traditional market for lunch.

You buy the coin and give them to the store owners for food.

Kind of buffet for lunch but you can choose your own style.

Definitely a must come for tourist! Go exchange your 5000 won with antique coin located in front of the main entrance, then explore the foods. From tteokpokki to hotteok, every little bit is a must try! Be prepare for a food coma after eating all those delicious food haha. For moslem, remember to always ask if there is a meat in it “Kogi isseo yo?”

From 1100-1500, buy 10 coins for 5k won, then pick different items for a couple coins at any stand with the red cafe sign. Great way to taste many dishes and they're all great! Vegetarian options are also available, as shown.
