Had an amazing experience here with my boyfriend. The owners of the studio are so sweet and they make sure you are doing a good job. They are incredibly patient and do their best to explain things even if English is not their first language. They guide you through the entire process of dyeing and will do the hard parts themselves.
First time trying indigo dyeing and the templates were an immense help. We loved our results and would definitely visit again when we are in Kyoto again.

Must do when in Kyoto. Such lovely people, Amma is very funny and was chatty even though we did not know the language but somehow we were having a conversation. This is one of the best experience we had in Kyoto. This is really a family bonding activity. My teenagers had a blast and wanted to go back again. Nothing you have experienced before. Visit is MUST.

An extremely pleasant and calming activity as a first-timer in Kyoto! I've always wanted to try dyeing so this was perfect. Yamamoto was patient in guiding us in English as much as he could. His mother was also present and a delight to chat with (even with our limited Japanese 😅). There were stencils provided for those of us who are less artistically-inclined, and the whole process was simple enough to follow. Definitely the most meaningful souvenir we've gotten on this trip!

We enjoyed a fabulous afternoon, creating beautiful art on fabric using the ancient technique of painting wax and dyeing the fabric with indigo. Yamamoto (I think that was his name) and his mother were very helpful and patient, guiding us to create some lovely bags, shirts and tapestry. Arigato!

Wow what an incredible experience! Joon and his mother Yoko were patient in teaching us the art of Roketsu dyeing. They helped us with the hard parts to make sure we left with beautiful pieces. We took a taxi there and the whole experience was about 2 hours.

Great experience! The owner and his mom are very sweet and we had a great time here making unique items. There are many stencils so you don’t have to be an artist to create something beautiful. Would definitely come again

Roketsuzome is a great place to learn the process of dyeing textile with indigo colouring. I loved the process from choosing the pattern to drawing it with heated wax to colouring it into blue. Such a relaxing creative moment. The owner is very kind and fun! The price of the workshop is really fair. Very good value for money. I would definitely go there again when I come back to visit Kyoto.

Very nice workshop. The man and his mother will guide you through the many steps of drawing, waxing, dying drying, ironing your piece.
They speak the essential English to help you do the work. You are included in all the steps of the process and shown how it works.
I did my session alone so I had them all for me and it took me only an hour to do my piece. I imagine that the more participant the longer it will take to complete the work since they will have to go from table to table to check on everybody.
All in all I had a wonderful time and did a good job even though I am not an artist at all.

We are really glad that we went for this experience. My older son and I are more artsy than my younger son and my mom but we all enjoyed the experience and came home with beautiful pieces. Only a tiny bit of translation help was needed from Google translate and the proprietors. I would do it again if we went back.
