I went for a night walk and early morning walk to avoid the crowds, which also meant that the side shops weren't open. It is a very beautiful area to enjoy old Japan. Loved how the franchises Starbucks and Gong Cha fit into the old Japanese architecture.

This was our first stop in Kyoto and it did not disappoint. There is something magical about this city and Ninenzaka captures that magic perfectly. You can get a high-end dinner, shop at the Studio Ghibli store, or even get delicious candied apples. Make sure you plan a visit to the Starbucks as well, if you are a coffee lover!

We had a great time here, just strolling along the street, having some snacks and ice cream, visiting souvenirs and tea shops. It just feel so calm to be here, walking in the spring breeze, immersing in this nostalgic vibe, observing the architecture, the people, it's like another world. Definitely worth a visit if you're heading for Kiyomizu

went during nighttime after 8pm so all the shops were closed/closing up. It's still a spectacle even when its dark, just makes it easier to take solo shots without any crowd in my opinion.

Although it would have been nice to experience this place with all the hustle and bustle.

I fill in love with Kyoto. This place is a great representation of how traditional is Japan. Beautiful tourist spot, but please be respectful to locals and don’t be loud and take photos in front of their houses. You will see a lot of people had put “no pictures” signs at their property but still people don’t care!

It will consider you have not been in Kyoto if you dont visit this area.
You could rent a Kimono and walk to this area. It is really surprising to me when Japanese can keep this ancient place in good condition for tourism until now.

Ninenzaka, nestled in the heart of Kyoto's historic Higashiyama district, is a charming and atmospheric street that transports visitors back in time to the bygone days of old Japan.

It is a picturesque cobblestone street flanked by traditional machiya townhouses, historic temples, and artisanal shops, making it a quintessential destination for those seeking to experience the timeless beauty of Kyoto's past. Stepping onto Ninenzaka feels like stepping into a living museum, where the rich tapestry of Japan's cultural heritage unfolds before your eyes.

One of the most striking features of Ninenzaka is its well-preserved architectural landscape, characterized by the elegant facades of centuries-old machiya townhouses. These wooden structures, with their latticed windows, tiled roofs, and intricately carved details, evoke a sense of nostalgia and reverence for the craftsmanship of generations past.

As we wander along Ninenzaka's meandering pathways, we encounter a wealth of cultural and historical treasures at every turn. From the majestic Kiyomizu-dera Temple, perched on the hillside overlooking the street, to the quaint teahouses and art galleries nestled among the alleyways, Ninenzaka offers a feast for the senses and the soul.

One of the highlights of Ninenzaka is its association with traditional crafts and artisanal goods. Visitors can browse for unique souvenirs such as handcrafted ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, and traditional Japanese confections, each reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Kyoto is renowned.

Food enthusiasts will delight in the culinary offerings of Ninenzaka, with its array of cozy cafes, traditional sweets shops, and fine dining establishments. Whether savoring a bowl of matcha tea and wagashi sweets in a historic teahouse or indulging in a multi-course kaiseki meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant, there's something to satisfy every palate along this gastronomic thoroughfare.

Visiting Ninenzaka in Kyoto was an enchanting experience, so much so that I found myself drawn back three times in one week.

Each stroll along the historic street, with its beautifully preserved wooden buildings, was a journey through a timeless slice of Japan. The atmosphere was captivating, creating moments of pure enjoyment that will linger in my memory.

An ancient stone paved pedestrian road lined with old traditional buildings selling all sorts of items from pottery to incense. A good place to stroll after visiting Kiyomizu-dera. Be sure to drop by a Starbucks located in an old townhouse.

Love it. Ninenzaka, or Ninen-zaka (二年坂) is an ancient 150m stone-paved pedestrian road and tourist attraction in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The road is lined with traditional buildings and shops, and is often paired with the similar road, Sannenzaka.
There is a Starbucks coffeehouse in a two-storey, century-old Japanese townhouse along Ninenzaka.

Beautifully preserved traditional street. However, once you’ve entered, you’d realize the modern have definitely seeped into the old buildings. Especially when you realize that one of the beautiful building is actually a Starbucks!? 😂 another popular building here is the studio ghibli shop.

Nice walk through a tradional part of Kyoto. Very picturistic as you stroll along the old brick road, constantly eyeing at the unique architecture of the houses and shops lined along the way. At times you will feel like you've turned back in time to the olden days of Japan. Can be crowded.

I loved this street in Kyoto. It was very crowded, but we still got to check out the shops in the area, and the view of the Tower of Yasaka was incredible. I went to Ninenzaka Cafe Garakuta and there’s a man in the front of the cafe who sells little watercolor prints he makes on traditional washi paper with wooden stamps. I got some beautiful flower stamp designs. I definitely recommend checking out this street!
