A place to stop by and quickly discover in the midst of other bigger attractions in Yazd. There are nice shops inside and outside of it.

Not so many things to see but the main building itself is worth it to visit. This place also has a traditional reservoir of drinking water which used to be open but was closed the last time I went. Also outside of the museum there are some shops to buy unique souvenirs.

Prepare to walk around a lot and explore! This place is much bigger that the entrance. There are tiny and narrow pathways that lead to other areas of the complex.
The stores are cute.
Definitely go stand under the dome… it apparently was called “prison” because of the fearful feeling you get standing under the tall dome.

Alexander's Prison is an ancient domed structure, apparently known by this name as a result of a reference in a Hafez poem. This complex contains a deep, circular, brick-lined pit almost 10 meters in diameter, resembling an ancient dungeon. There is also a well and some nooks in the courtyard. It is alleged by some to have been built by Alexander to hold his captives during his conquest of Persia and alleged by others to have been built by the Persians to hold Alexander himself. Whatever the true story, the complete complex itself is almost certainly a later construction.

beautiful place
Alexander’s Prison (locally called “Zendaan-e Eskandar”), is a legendary place named after Alexander the Great, also known as Alexander of Macedonia, who overthrew the Persian Empire in about 330 BC.
The mysterious place is located in one of the old neighborhoods of Yazd, in central Iran. However, as a modern visitor, what you see is like a centuries-old domed building made of bricks, clay, and mortar; it does not match a prison or so at all.
The complex, however, contains a deep, circular, brick-lined pit almost 10 meters in diameter resembling an ancient dungeon found at the heart of the old. There is also a well and some nooks in the courtyard.
The most vigorous account arises from a reference to a poem of Hafez, the industrious 14th-century Persian poet Khwaja Shams al-Din Muḥammad Ḥafeẓ-e Shirazi, known by his pen name Hafez.
According to the legend, a deep well in the middle of the courtyard of the structure was in fact built by Alexander the Great and used as a dungeon.

In the heart of historical city of Yazd, surrounded by old buildings and wind towers in the narrow alleyways, this building brings you back to old history of a traditional Iranian city. Architecture is awesome and definitely worths visiting.

It is not a prison. Also Alexander the Great didn't even visit this place.
The place is full of souvenir shops. But to be honest, the only thing worth seeing is its former prison's mosque which has a small collection of Islamic artifacts. I would really put two stars if this building were not in Yazd. I put five stars just because Yazd is my second city.

Good place also with shopd

You should mainly visit the place for the different shops! Great souvenirs like handpainted ceramics, handwowen slik and cotton scarfs and hand-made leather goods like belts, wallets and bags. I believe prices to be very fair compared to shops close by, so buy your silk scarf here. You need to pay for entrance, but it is worth it compared to the fine things you can buy behind the prison walls.

Alexander Prison, or Ziaieh School, is actually a 10-century-old school located in the Fahadan neighborhood of Yazd, next to the tomb of 12 Imams. The date of its construction dates back to Alexander's invasion of Iran, which was used as a prison, which was later changed to a school. The architecture of this building is very relaxing and pleasant.

Watching the sunset from this balcony and drinking tea was a highlight of the trip. Yazd old town is just incredible. Go get lost there and find some gems!

Do not expect Alexander's prison there.this is an old school. But we call it Alexander's prison, because many notable iranians in the past have mentioned it in their books and some of them have visited Alexanders prison. So by the findings they guess this building should had been alexanders prison.

The highest and oldest roof that I saw as a dome in Yazd. Remember to have your GPS with you because it's really easy to get lost in old alleys of Yazd. In this place you can buy some unique tile works and handicrafts that I didn't find them anywhere else in Iran.
