Beautiful holy place and wonderful architecture of marbal stones. I usually visited this in the evening time which is most peaceful time for me at that place. The mosque has one pound inside the premises. You can see fish tortoise there.

I recently visited this masjid and was impressed by its grandeur and elegance. The presence of a pond with fishes and turtles added a unique touch to the peaceful atmosphere. The facilities were excellent, and the masjid was well maintained. Overall, it was a beautiful place for prayer and reflection

Masjid, open both for men and have a separate compartment for women. Women should take advantage of the facility and see that you don't miss your prayers. There are separate washrooms and wuzu basins also available.
I highly thank the Masjid Committee for this arrangement. Jazakallahu Khayr.

The mosque is grand and well maintained. The staff good at their work. The only drawback is that no four wheelers can go till the mosque. You have to get down at a distance and walk till the mosque. The lanes are narrow and congested. Though two wheelers can manage to reach upto the mosque. Lots of variety of shops located here. I had gone for some personal work so I have no knowledge about tickets or tours

Beautifully built | Magnificent Architecture | Historic Site/Heritage Building | 1802 Establishment | Mughal Era ——- One of the biggest Jamia Masjids of Mumbai (out of 68) | The Masjid gets highly overcrowded on Fridays - Outer market is also very very crowded - There lies a fish pond underneath the Masjid (basement) | Must visit places of Mumbai - #sukoon #peace #spiritual #salaat

I felt the inner ambience of the Masjid from the outside crowds and shouts. Actually the pool area and the biodiversity in it is a good scene. Use of any kind of Cameras is prohibited 🚫 inside the Masjid premises. This kind old Masjid still well maintained by Bombay Trust. Feeling blessed to be here. The library in first floor consists rare book contents open from 10:30 AM to 05:00 PM.

It’s a place which offers serenity under surrounding hustle bustle. Truly a monument with natural pond for wadu.
The well maintained library of historical manuscripts is a priceless treasure for scholars and historians. The mufti saheb the incharge of mosque is a down to earth person though he possesses wealth of knowledge. It’s a blessed place and believers will receive abundant blessings on its visit.

It is a heritage Masjid. Old structure in one of the busiest areas of Mumbai.
It also has a hauz (artificial pond) for ablution. The jumma prayer is slightly early at around 1.10 pm.

This Holy Site is situated by the busy Mangaldas Market (reviewed separately). It stands proudly with its splendid domes and towers amidst the hustle and bustle of the nearby Market.

We were in the area to see Crawford Market, we spotted this imposing building at the end of the road, so we walked up to investigate.

In the eighteenth century, a large tank (water reservoir) was situated at this site in the midst of gardens and open land and belonged to a Konkani Muslim merchant trading in Goa and Calicut, who in about 1775, agreed to the erection of a mosque at this site on condition that the tank was preserved intact.

The construction started initially in 1775 with raising of foundations on the tank. Objections were raised by neighbours that delayed construction until 1778. More disputes arose with illegal construction activities to its west and south. Finally the erstwhile governor of Bombay, Sir Meadows Taylor decided in favour of the mosque authorities. The date of its completion (AD 1802)/(AH 1217) is derivable from the chronogram Jahaz-i- Akhirat, "The ship of the world to come" which contains an allusion to the fact that it was constructed on the tank.

A one-story building was therefore erected over the tank and formed the original nucleus of the present Jama Mosque. A top floor was added with the munificence of a prominent konkani merchant Mohammad Ali Roghay in 1814.

The Jama Mosque is a quadrangular structure of brick and stone, encircled by a ring of terrace roofed and double storeyed buildings, the ground floors of which are let out as shops. The chief or eastern gate of the mosque leads directly across an open courtyard to the ancient tank, which is now furnished with masonry steps and embankments, built in 1893, and contain about ten feet of water fed by springs at the bottom, that contains gold and silver fish and few turtles. This is used for ritual ablutions (wudu), however modern facilities are also available for this purpose.

From the depth of the tank rise sixteen black stone arches, constructed in 1874, which support the whole fabric of the mosque, the upper story being upheld by five rows of wooden pillars, each of which contains a receptacle for sacred books. The arches in the tank were built in 1874 at a cost of Rs. 75000/- while other noteworthy additions to the premises are the large windows in the north, east, and south sides constructed in 1898, and the school building Rs. 20000 in 1902.
