Head Post Office, Kochi

It is one of the oldest post offices in central Kerala. The Old Anjal box is still present but not in use. The current post box is located on the right side of its entrance gate. It would be wonderful if they kept postcards available at all times.

Great service, i was sending a parcel to germany. 4.95kg was 3780INR. They don‘t sell boxes, but you will get in the shops next to it. You have to fill out a document and bring a copy of passport. They helped me to seal it. Thanks!

I'm visiting the city and stopped by this well maintained post office near fort kochi. I was happy to see such helpful staff who smiled while doing their work- sadly not a common sight these days. My post cards a flying out as happy as i am. Thank you quaint neighbourhood post office!

Though Kerala post was formed in the year of 1961; there was a separate postal system in the former state of Travancore and Cochin, known as “Anchal Post”.

British India had hundreds of Princely States but very few among them issued postage stamps. Anchal post was the early postal service started in the kingdom of Travancore and Cochin before Independence of India by Mahendravarma – the King of Travancore in early 1700’s.

The name Anchal derives from the Greek word Angelos meaning a messenger who runs on foot. The post men used to run wearing a khaki uniforms with the postal bag carrying on his head and carrying staff with bells in his hand.

The Anchal Post also had unique post boxes known as “Anchal Pillars”. These boxes were were about 3 ft. tall and were hexagonal in shape resembling pillars of temple. They depicted symbol of Anchal Post i.e. “Shankha” or a conch on sides of the box. These small pillars had the capacity to take about 3000 letters.

The Anchal Post was later merged in India Post after the Independence of India. Traces of them are, however, found on the streets of Kerala which are now one of the distinguished heritages of the State.
Thus, in all ways Anchal can be identified as the skeleton of the modern Kerala Postal Circle.

Excellent service. Went to send a parcel to France and they were so competent. I was done in less time then it takes to say namaste. Made me want to send parcels every day...

Possibility to send parcel to your home country. You have to take with you a photocopy of your passport (Main and Visa pages), some tape and a box (you can find that on the shops around). The staff take care of the rest. They were very helpful.

I paid 2370 rupees for 5kg parcel to France.

Good quality services. Staff is kind and helpful. Packing is provided for a small fee. Prices much lower than private services - for almost 8kg package to Poland I paid INR 2450 (including packing). Photocopy of passport and visa is needed to send a package.

Best post office. Clean surroundings and building is so beautiful and well maintained. Calm and quite area. Employers are friendly too
