The epicentre of Heritage Walks of Mumbai.....the sprawling 30 steps lead to the majestic colonnades. Asiatic Society of Mumbai was formed as the Literary Society of Bombay in Mumbai on 26 November 1804, by Sir James Mackintosh. It was formed with the purpose of "promoting useful knowledge, particularly such as is now immediately connected with India". Asiatic Society also known as Town Hall is landmark Heritage of Mumbai. The aura of the building is spell bounding.

One of the heritage sites and a must visit. The building and the library are grand and you can experience it when you are going up the stairs with marble statues on both sides. While they have tried to modernize it by adding computers etc for searching books but it still has the old world charm. Its sad that it is not frequented enough by people these days in the age on search engines. A must visit when you are in Mumbai.

This place is on the way to gateway of India from CST station. If you are member of this library then you will be able to enter else you may enjoy the photography on the steps.
Place is very much photogenic. Many movies have used this location in their movies.
This is one of big library having many books journals etc. it is founded in 1804 and aim was to promote research and share knowledge through books.

Such a nice place, just crossed by this road we show and remembered this library we show in many Bollywood movies.

Must visit once, there are a lot of people sitting on the stairs..

Great place to study ..it's free of cost and have plenty of books of all kinds ....they also have major newspapers of mumbai ..you can go there to study any day between 10am and 5:30 pm for free..they have different spaces for men and women and also have a kids section ...best thing about this place is the antique aesthetic vibe it offers ..taking photos inside is prohibited so I couldn't upload any...it's kinda sad knowing that only a small fraction of people going there actually study and majority people visit just to take photographs and shoot videos.

It has been properly kept over the years and is definitely worth a visit. It's a club that hosts horse races throughout the year. Otherwise, the property can be used as a regular club, which is a lovely facility.

As iconic as it gets. Imagine getting some sun at the stairs on a cold winter morning, except there are no cold winters in Mumbai. 10/10 still

A place not to be missed if you are visiting Mumbai for the first time. This place is the best for photoshoots. Whether you want to do a pre wedding or a theme shoot. The background is white and makes it ideal for photographers to bring their creativity. The Greek style architecture of the library gives a old world charm in the busy Mumbai streets. Not just photographers but also students studying architecture, interior design can visit this place and artists who wish to sketch. If you are planning a photoshoot it's better if you visit early as there will be less crowd. The streets on both sides of the library are also ideal for photographers.

The building also attract you when you will pass this place . It’s having a rich history & famous all over the world. We was walking in night and clicked pictures here . It’s nice to walk around these buildings.

A treasure trove of knowledge!

Very supportive and helpful library staff. Well equipped with books from all genres. A great place to do some in-depth research/study.

The original Italian manuscript of Dante’s Divine Comedy is also one of the gems which have been preserved in this library. You will also find here a collection of books written in the European languages like Latin, German, Greek and French. You will also find here a rare collection of old coins which date back to the 5th century during the era of Akbar and Shivaji. Various lectures and seminar are also conducted by the committees which are very helpful for the scholars and researchers.
Sir James Mackintosh in the year 1804 had started the Asiatic Society of Bombay Library along with the literary society of Bombay. In 1991, a dust free air conditioned laboratory was built in the library in order to conserve old books in the room. Now the library has a wide collection of rare old books in it which makes it even more attractive to the readers.
