I recently visited the Open Hand Monument in Chandigarh and was in awe of its unique design and symbolism. Designed by the famous architect Le Corbusier, the monument represents the idea of "the hand to give and the hand to take." The hand-shaped structure stands tall and proud, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

The monument is not just a piece of art, but also a symbol of unity and peace. The concept behind the design is to create a sense of togetherness among people from different backgrounds and cultures. The monument also serves as a reminder to be generous and compassionate towards one another.

The monument is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, with plenty of benches to sit and take in the surrounding beauty. It's a must-visit destination for anyone interested in art and architecture, as well as those looking for a peaceful and reflective experience. Overall, the Open Hand Monument in Chandigarh is a true masterpiece and a testament to Le Corbusier's visionary design.

The Open Hand Monument in Chandigarh stands as a symbol of creativity and the vision of renowned architect Le Corbusier, who played a pivotal role in designing the city. Erected in Capitol Complex, the monument is a significant part of Chandigarh's architectural landscape.

Completed in 1985, the Open Hand Monument is a colossal metallic structure that represents the concept of "open to give, open to receive." Its distinctive design features a hand with a wide, open palm, positioned to rotate freely with the wind. The symbolism behind the rotating hand signifies the city's openness to ideas, innovation, and cultural exchange.

The monument serves as a metaphorical expression of peace, unity, and collaboration. The concept aligns with Le Corbusier's vision for Chandigarh as a modern, inclusive city. The Capitol Complex, where the Open Hand Monument is located, is also home to other significant government buildings, adding to the architectural significance of the area.

Visitors often marvel at the monument's unique design and the picturesque setting against the backdrop of the Shivalik Hills. The Open Hand Monument remains not only an artistic marvel but also a testament to the city's progressive and forward-thinking ethos.

Open hand Monument is the symbol of Chandigarh (peace) and I just loved this monument. It is situated at Sector 1 Chandigarh.
Because high court and vidhan sabha is there, security is very tight here. You have to show your ID card to the security personnel to viait this monument.
This monument has historic meaning and value. One of the few amazing facts of this monument is that it rotates 360° and the direction of the thumb shows the direction the wind.

Le Corbusier Purpose For Building An Open Hand Monument:
It would be a sin to compare the Open hand Monument with any other monument of the world because Le Corbusier had a very strong reason to build such a monument, which is the official emblem of Chandigarh administration. The emblem for Chandigarh was designed to convey peace & reconciliation, and the unity of Mankind. The Open hand Monument stands in Sector-1 Capitol Complex and many other places of Chandigarh like Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh-Punjab Border (Zirakpur), etc.

Le Corbusier Philosophy Behind An Open Hand Monument:
Open hand Monument expresses the philosophy, the result of a life of study, of struggles, of defeats, of victories. From the first meeting with Prime Minister Nehru in Delhi and Chandigarh, the open hand was presented. Over the year the open hand became the crowning point of what Le Corbusier called the contemplation hollow, a place to discuss public affairs far from officials, elected or imposed. The hollow was dug at the summit of the city dominated by the 28 meter hand, shining against the Himalayas. The floor of this consideration,’considering to think, see, to talk about what’s real’ , was dug 5 meter deep and consist of two amphitheaters. Why Two? Because Corbusier philosophy was that ‘there are always two sides to a question.’ There are some chairs for people who wish to speak in the evening.

Did you know, An Open Hand Monument is mounted on a ball bearing. It turn with the wind, not aimlessly, to express what life really is, constant changes and our daily break. The Open Hand is the only political act of Le Corbusier life.
The true and simple meaning of the Open Hand is to GIVE & RECEIVE.

Symbol of Optimism in the world of catastrophe.

Do let us know what else do you know about Sir Le Corbusier’s Open Hand Monument and Chandigarh in the comment section below.

The symbol of Chandigarh. It's situated in the Capital Complex newr to the High Court. It represents both a hand and a dove of peace. Chandigarh was Indias first post colonial city and the Indian government wished to make a clear statement as to how modern and forward looking the new country would be. le Corbusier was engaged to effectively design the layout of the whole city including the large public buildings that forum the Capitol Complex.

It’s an honor for me to write a review for this unique place, one of the masterpieces of the greatest architect of the 20 century - Le Corbusier
Although Chandigarh is not one of the major tourist locations in that part of India it is well worth the visit. The Capitol Complex is a demonstration of modern architecture at its best
