Velorvattom Sri Mahadeva Temple is a Hindu temple located in Cherthala in Alleppey district in the Indian state of Kerala. Believed to be constructed in the 7th century by Azhvanchery Thamprakkal. According to the legend, Kerala is the land gifted by Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu. The installation of Lord Shiva’s idol was made by the same sage Parasurama. The temple of Velorvattom Sri Mahadeva is one of the few temples in the state where two nalambalam and two flagpoles are dedicated. The temple is one of 108 temples of Siva contained in Shivalaya Sothram; The exact period of installation of this temple is not known. This temple is the family of Kudumbha kshetram or moolasthana prathista for many famous families of Kerala.
Two Sree kovils are there and in both Siva pratistha is there. One is Thekkanappan the Kirathamurthy and the other is Vadakkanappan, as Mahadeva. 5 poojas, 3 seevali everything is there, as per rule.

One of the famous Lord Shiva temple in kerala having two dwajasthambam or kodimaram (flagpole) which is rare. This temple is located near cherthala town and hardly 1km from national highway and cherthala railway station. Festival is held between February and march. Temple atmosphere is calm and quiet. Temple auditorium is available for marriage functions which is located inside the premises. Huge parking space available.

“Velorvattom Maha deva temple”, in Mararikkilam, Alappuzha, was owned by “Azhvanchery Thamprakkal” and now maintained by Kerala Urazma Devasam Board (KUDB). The temple is believed to be 700 years old. It is believed that the temple was created by Vilwamangalam Swamiyar.
The Temple has two Nadas ,two Dhawjas and Sreekovils in which Lord Shiva resides in two forms which is very rare in Kerala. This temple is one among the 108 temples concecrated by Parasurama in Kerala. This temple is considered to be the MoolaKudumbam of many well known Families in Kerala.

This is yet another temple that I had only recently come across although I have travelled along the Cherthala Haripad route many times. I absolutely loved this temple! There are 2 idols of the main deity Lord Siva, which I found quite unique as I've not come across a temple where 2 garbhagrihas are seen for the same moorthy within the same temple. There is a rather large pond within the temple premises. It seems to be well maintained and I could see a few people using it. I understand this temple to be very old. It is constructed in the typical Kerala architectural style and it is well preserved.

It is easily accessible via the Cherthala Road that connects the NH-66 with Thanneermukkam and Cherthala. There are ample parking facilities for all types of vehicles on the railway station road entrance. The other entrance is via a narrow road which does not allow for parking of four wheelers.

It's yet another big Shiva temple in this region. It is two temples side by side with independent entrance outside, but connected inside. Please remember you need to enter from right side entrance or Northern gate as you stand facing the temple. There is ample parking space available. Om namah shivaya.
