Casa del Marqués de Arcos

Palacio del Marqués de Arcos. Construction started A.D 1741. End of construction A.D 1746. Located in the heart of Old Havana. The main entrance is on Calle Mercaderes. An architectural gem built in a combined Baroque and Colonial style. The royal treasurer Diego Peñalver y Angulo bought the land and built in 1741 his residence together with the revenue office. Until the end of the 19th century, the palace was the residence of the rich Marquis de Arcos. Palacio del Marqués de Arcos presents Baroque facades, five arcades, Doric columns, a nice patio and an internal Italian staircase with the gallery. You may see two balconies ‘’rejería’’ (it's an art of building bars or gates) called as well grills. At this big house, the famous Havana doctor Francisco Tenez lived. A post office and municipaly flats were there. The Liceo Artistic and Literary Society was there as well as. Currently, it houses a broadly understood cultural center (Mozarteum, library, media library, art gallery, digital art room for children, photography section and conference room). Present, just after refurbishment ended in 2016, Palacio del Marqués de Arcos remains the best-preserved palaces of Spanish Colonial Architecture.

This is a place worth seeing. I visited in February 2018.

El edificio del Palacio Lombillo ha sido restaurado por la OHCH. Complementa con su presencia el extraordinario conjunto de edificaciones alrededor de la Plaza de la Catedral, junto al Palacio del Marqués de Arcos, La casa de Luis Chacón o Condes de Casa Bayona, y el Palacio del Marqués de Aguas Claras Arquitectónicamente del S-XVI muy modificado hasta el S-XIX. Con
salas de exposiciones transitorias y permanentes con el mobiliario típico de la aristocracia habanera. Actual sede del Plqn Maestro de la OHCH.
