Beyond Roots

During my visit to Havana in June, I had the opportunity to visit the Beyond Roots store and tour.

I am beyond grateful for tour guides insight and sincerity. I look for to visiting Havana in the near future and being in the company of brothers and sisters in Havana Cuba.

My family is from guanabacoa and I have been often to Neighborhood but I feel this is first time I saw it.

We began the tour with Adriana who has a background in economics and vast knowledge of the Afro-Cuban religion. We walked through guanabacoa and were explained the background of the Neighborhood, the religion and how the local economy worked. We stopped at a BB gun shooting range and had a shoot then continued to a local cultural center where we discussed the individual Orishas and had a beer.

The most unique part of this experience followed after when we went to the house of a high priest of the religion where we received blessings as well as explanations of what everything meant and symbolized. Lunch was homemade and given in the backyard under the shade of a ceiba tree. It was delicious !!!!!!

Afterwards we were taught to dance to the seven African powers to a five man band! What an experience!!!! There are no words!

I sat and ate my third portion of food while my mother had a consultation with the priest , Something she had always wanted; thank you Adriana for setting that up. When she finished we were gifted two eleguas and obatala necklaces both of which we will cherish forever.

Finally we were driven to Havana vieja to shop and enjoy the store of beyond roots.

Do not read this and “think about” doing this experience, do it, this is truly Cuban both traditional and new and by supporting this organization you are supporting the Cuban people in the best way possible.

What an amazing and beautiful store.

This store highlights the Afro Cuban narrative while selling products that portray such, like T shirts, Orisha inspired soap and art. This company is also fully managed and operated by Afro Cuban women and provides much needed natural hair products. Even if you walk out without purchasing anything (highly unlikely) you will gain a fortune of knowledge and will have dove into the heart of Cuban culture while experiencing and supporting the new Cuba.

Make it a point to go.

I cannot say enough about my experience. It was a beautiful experience while visiting.

En el día de hoy tuve mi primera experiencia visitando esta maravillosa tienda. Verdaderamente tengo que decir que vivir la sensación en vivo y verlo en fotos no tiene nada que ver. Una tienda con cientos de accesorios afrocubanos y un ambiente tan familiar que dan ganas de quedarse. ¡+5 pts. para Beyond Roots y recomiendo a todos la visita!

Lo adoré: encontré todo lo que fui buscando para mi transición y más. Me aconsejaron y me trataron superbien!! Adoré ese sitio!
