López Serrano Building

This is the most beatitul exponent of Art Deco architecture in the heart of Vedado neighbourhood. It was built is the early 30's in the XX Century and opened in 1932. It was the tallest building in Havana until 1956, when the FOCSA building was inaugurated. It is an apartment building and is very simmilar to the Empire States building in New York. The building was the property of the heirs to Jose Lopez Serrano, owner of La Moderna Poesía bookstore (another beautiful example of Art Deco at the beginning of Obispo Street in Old Havana) millionare who committed suicide in 1921 because he considered himself in bankruptcy after learning he was left only a few millions in his bank account.

El Edificio López Serrano fue el edificio residencial más alto de Cuba hasta la construcción del FOCSA en 1956. Fue diseñado por el arquitecto Ricardo Mira en 1929. Ha sido muchas veces comparado con el Edificio Bacardí de la Habana Vieja, construido dos años después del López Serrano,debido a sus similitudes en las torres. El congresista, senador y candidato presidencial Eduardo Chibás vivía en el 14to piso cuando cometió suicidio, en agosto de 1951, en Estación de Radio CMQ

The deterioration does not detract architectural beauty to this emblematic building representative of the Art Deco style in Cuba. First skyscraper of Cuba that resembles in design to the Empire State is an architectural jewel of the years 30-50 built by the company Mira and Rosich. Currently an apartment building.

Un edificio emblemático de la ciudad y uno de los símbolos del Art Deco de la ciudad. Actualmente, por la falta de mantenimiento, se encuentra bastante deteriorado. No obstante, en su interior se pueden observar aún varios detalles constructivos originales, como los pisos, los trabajos de madera de las puertas y el peculiar último piso.
