You cannot beat the price and the location of this property! The rooms are large, the bed is comfortable, and the amenities are excellent. It is a bonus that the Backpackers property is accessible just across the street as it has the pool, bar, and restaurant available for those who stay in the Guesthouse. Both of these properties are in a safe location as the Supreme Court of Justice is only two blocks away, so there is good local police presence. In addition, the downtown area is nearby with stores, other restaurants, and other attractions such as the National Theater, parks, and so forth. Superb value for the money!

Outstanding value spot. Very basic rooms, but the bed was comfortable and the hot water was hot. If you take advantage of the partnership with the backpacking lodge across the street it goes to another level. Pool, hammocks in the courtyard, etc. Great place to shake off travel fatigue before setting out from San Jose.

Such a great value for the price!!! Clean and comfy bed. Friendly people around to talk with. Secured with coded locks to get in. The check in guy was extremely friendly and I was so thankful for the 24/7 reception since I got in much later than expected. Only a 30 minute walk from the Tuasa airport bus and Terminal 7-10 (to La Fortuna). Super safe feeling area of town. There is an area with breweries that is a 15 minute walk away, too! The bed had a regular outlet, plus usb plug in on the outlet, plus curtains for privacy. I will absolutely stay here again once I come back!!

What an amazing spot. I really love it. The staff is very helpful, the tourists that come here are friendly, the rooms are clean, and it's extremely cheap! What more can you ask for?

Really great location, close to the bus terminals to connect you with the rest of Costa Rica. The kitchen also has everything you need to cook, the dorm beds were comfy, and the place hostel was clean.

I love this historic building. I stay often when I'm in Costa Rica. The rooms are large and comfortable. The windows open easily so you can get fresh air. It's a 2km walk to the central bus station, so it's close to town but not too close. They partner with the hostel across the street where there is a pool, bar and restaurant. The food is fantastic, the service in this area is excellent. The only drawback is that there isn't daily house keeping, the trash bin isn't emptied etc. You have to take the trash downstairs and request a new bin liner. Otherwise, I very much love this property.

Great value private room hostel.
Rooms, common space, and bathrooms are kept very clean.
Location is very good, easy short walk to
-downtown
-nightlife area
-hipster hang foodie area
The staff and atmosphere is just okay, not very engaging or lively, but you do have access to the pool and common area across the street, which has more active vibe.
Be aware lots of french people stay here, owner team is french, some worker s are french. This comes with that stereotypical french "I don't want to engage or acknowledge you" attitude. But all types stay here too, remote work also.
The wifi disconnects at times, one cute garden doesn't get signal. They said they will improve it, if they don't improve it I would drop the rating.

Costa Rica Guesthouse was very affordable for the spacious room we got, plus we had a balcony which was a lovely surprise. The WiFi was fast and supported a 2 hour virtual class session I had the evening we were there without issues. There is plenty of community space in the hotel, including an outdoor space, which was great for hanging out or having breakfast. The people who work there are super kind and lent us an umbrella on a rainy day, as well as held our bags for us for 12 hours after we checked out.

Our only minor complaints were the shower was wet when we arrived and had hair in it, and there were little bugs (not bedbugs) all over both end tables.

I picked this hotel after Orbitz let me book a room at a hostel that no longer exists... so I was expecting something lack-luster. For the price this hotel exceeds my expectations!! All the staff was very friendly and spoke good English as well as at least French, if not more. My room was very spacious and I loved that it had its own bathroom and patio. You can buy very inexpensive drinks at the bar/reception. There is also a gated parking lot which is great because I had a rental car while there.
Very walkable to downtown San Jose. Also has a nice little made-to-order breakfast. I loved it and would definitely stay again next time in San Jose!!

A nice, well managed place for a short stay in San Jose. Clean, friendly and professional. Have some earplugs with you as there are some rooms which can be a little noisy sometimes.

One of the front desk guys was very friendly, he went far and beyond to help me with things not related to the hotel.
Toilet is in the corridor (large shower, toilet and small sink). Do not expect to sleep well, especially on weekends, I could hear all the noises from the street and corridor.
Wi-Fi is a joke, there are some spots where it actually works but you have to find them. 5 stars for helpdesk, spacious room and low price.

Place is conviently located and good bang for your buck. I used my frequent flyer miles to pay for 3 out of 4 nights that I stayed. Friendly staff, comfortable beds, clean all the way around! Water for those cool morning showers could of been warmer! Lots of bars in the surrounding areas. Museums and shopping areas close by. Highly recommended!!!

Clean rooms, nice breakfast. Very helpful staff. We came here for the first few days in Costa Rica and don't regret it. Go there if you fancy a good hostel with reasonable prices and friendly staff!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. They made my daughter and I feel right at home! Staff also speak English so no problems with communicating. They helped us to choose and book a tour to visit a coffee plantation, Poas volcano, and La Pax waterfalls, which was excellent! The Guesthouse was tidy and the building is older but well maintained and clean. Our room (Terraba Sierpe) was spacious with two large beds. We shared a bathroom, which was no problem. Internet was good and free, only a little spottiness briefly one out of four nights. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper as it is in a busy area and sometimes other guests are a bit noisy as they come in. Location was perfect for us, downtown. Very close to museums, parks, and pedestrian mall. I hope to stay here again!

Our favorite place to stay in San Jose, some of the rooms we've had are really big, some with big bathrooms and huge showers. Clean, quiet, really nice staff, especially David at the front desk, nice free breakfast with lots of choice, dependable shower pressure and hot water, yay. Good location and walking distance to some nice restaurants and the main Avenue.

Big rooms and you got curtains at the dorm bed. After traveling for 3 weeks through CR it felt like a luxury apartment for us.

Really great hostel with beautiful rooms. I particularly liked the cosy little backyard to work in, and it’s walkable to everything.
