A Must-Visit Place in Steinbach

I love museums, especially small-town museums where you can walk freely without noisy surveillance. This is the place. There are many exhibitions and displays, and you can even touch some of the items. The whole buildings have been carefully restored to transport you back to a century-old atmosphere. And there's a real windmill! A real, working windmill.

Don't forget to visit the café. Try the bread made the traditional way, along with many simple but tasty dishes.

We visited during 2021 and loved all of the exhibits. It was quiet and empty when we were there, but that may be because of covid restrictions! Everything was well cared for, the buildings impressive and the placques informative. They had an impressive collection of tractors and even had a pit house. The restaurant served authentic wareneki, some of the best I've ever had. We loved every part of this visit!

Winter in the Village is very cute! Hot chocolate and apple cider included. You can rent kick sleds and go skating, and they light fire pits for you and include marshmallows to roast. You can go to the historic museum inside as well. You can find more info on their website but it runs I think December through February. We paid $6 to get in.

Note: the website that said there would be b live music on Friday nights but there was none when we went; they said they couldn't find someone. So if you are banking on the music and more people being around, then I would recommend calling in advance to double-check if the entertainment is in fact on.

We really enjoyed the lovely winter lights at the museum early in February. The open fire was warming. David Graham, singer/songwriter from Steinbach, presented a wonderful selection of songs and music.

The staff is friendly. The lights in the evening were beautiful and there was a fire going to keep you warm. The horses for the wagon ride were handsome. Overall great experience and saw my first two Canada Geese of the season.

Coming from an Anabaptist background this place felt like home to me. It's well maintained, the lawn is groomed; everything about this place makes my German heart happy.
The Windmill works, there wasn't enough wind the day we were there to make it turn but someday I hope to see it spin.
I had thought this place was just for school field trips but it's definitely worth a visit.

Tonight we were booked by The City of Steinbach for their Employee Family Appreciation picnic. The first time setting up at this beautiful and unique venue.
Access for set-up was so great and the people that work their are so friendly!
We highly recommend this venue for any event!! Love how you can open the overhead doors for some incredible views of this beautiful museum!!

Wow! This museum is outstanding. The staff were so friendly, the information was very easy to understand. I spent about 2.5 hours there and still had to cut my time short. I would recommend 4 hours there if you enjoy reading and looking at everything! I didn’t stop in the restaurant but the menu looks delicious. Definitely worthy of your time!

Our family loves this place. In the summer, their buffet lunch is very yummy! The gift shop is fun on the grounds and my kids like to visit it and get a candy treat there. I like all the events they do there. Lots of variety for family and fun things to do there

One of my favourite sites to visit!

If you are planning a trip to Manitoba, are prepared to drive to a suburb, want to feel and experience early to mid 1900s living, and enjoy vintage automobiles and animals, this is the perfect spot to go because many of the structures and items have been kept in outstanding shape. Plus, the quilts they created are awesome!

Additionally, as a Christian and first generation immigrant myself, understanding more about the first generation Mennonite immigrants from Europe and Soviet Russia was fascinating.

However, due to the lack of public transit from Winnipeg to this location, it can be challenging for some of you, particularly travellers, to visit. Nevertheless, I still highly recommend you to stop by here if you get the chance!

What a gem! How have we heard so little about this? Everything about this place was fantastic. The food, the volunteers, the pioneer buildings, the petting zoo, the museum, the soddy. We'll definitely be returning.

EDIT: the original review above was from last year Canada Day. We returned again this year for Canada Day, this time with extended family, and enjoyed it all over again. I'm not sure what it is like on a normal day but it was lovely today. Bonus, there are loads of places to fill up water bottles with nice water. And we discovered nice bathrooms this year. Last year we only used the old bathrooms. Clean but not so nice. But there are brand new beautiful bathrooms. I don't know how we missed them last year!

This was my first visit. Incredibly nice staff, and so much to look at. They have done such an amazing job curating everything they have. Like stepping into the past, you really get a feeling that you are connected.
I look forward to going back in the summer when everything is in full swing.

I had planned to visit many times and today was the day I finally went! They did an amazing job of recreating a Mennonite 'village', and I was so impressed with the entire site. I can't wait for my next visit and to show others. They have recreated the barns, homes, tinsmith shop, school, and church, and all are actual historical structures donated to the museum. They have the iconic windmill and even an actual section of the Berlin Wall that was shipped to Canada. They also have a small garage full of vintage autos. There was a small farm with some animals. Just an absolutely fabulous afternoon!!

One of my good friends came out to visit from our home town (Nanaimo, B.C)

She wanted to visit the museum and I had never been (I've lived here for 4 years) so we made a day of it.

Most of the attractions are out doors, so visit on a nice day (which we did)

We leared a lot and it was very interesting and fun to walk through the buildings.

The gift shop has a lot of nice homemade items to choose from.

The resaurant was closed when we went so we didn't get to try the food.

I loved interacting with the animals. Lots of babies and the animals were happy to let us pet them.

The workers we encountered were very nice and friendly.

Thank you for the lovely experience 😊

Better than we expected! Shed light on some
Interesting history. They even have a chunk of the Berlin Wall! (Which seemed unrelated to Mennonite history?) Not a huge hall, and all the outdoor buildings are closed in the winter seasons starting in Oct. took us 2 hours to go thru what was open, a great amount of time.
