Fantastic all round delicious shop! They made a fabulous coffee and the ice cream was delicious! So smooth and creamy. Generous scoop sizes and tasters too.
I will say they do have a 10% surcharge on Saturday and Sunday so keep that in mind.

Very friendly staff, great coffee, up from Melbourne with work, highly recommend the pastries. There pies on the list for next visit

Good customer service. I bought take away. A chicken and leek pie and a Danish custard and apple. The chicken pie was delicious. I thought the pastry was too thick, individual liking. The Danish was absolutely delicious mouth watering, every bite was out of this world and just kept getting better. Best sweet food I have eaten for a long time. Its been a few days and I'm still salivating and enjoying the experience. I will certainly be visiting there again and I have told family and friends to visit. Can't say enough good things.

Might be one of the best bakeries I tried in VIC! The pastry on the sausage roll was flaky, and the filling was delicious! The other pastry and sweets were nice too.

No. 1 pie in Castlemaine! Fast friendly staff. Clean feel. Huge selection of meats, vegan and gluten free!

I got the lamb & minted pea pie, possibly one of the best pies i have had that i can remember... Wish you were closer to the city 💔

The best chocolate carmel salted tart in Victoria.

I ate the Lentil Eggplant Pie. The crisp outer covering held itself together until I finished it. Very tasty.

What really impressed me was the types of veggie/vegetarian/vegan pies.

Must go here! This chef sure knows his stuff. Highly recommend the Beef Burgundy, Chicken & Leek and the Lamb & Minted Pea Pies. But leave room for the Almond Croissants & Lemon Tarts!!!

I would just like to say thankyou for repairing our 21st birthday cake at such short notice, wonderful service, very professional and the best customer service I have ever come across. Some business should take a leaf out of your book. The cake its self was very yummy and I have always bought my specialty cakes from your shop. Certainly wasn't disappointed. Well done and thanks once again.

Pastries and sweets that live up to the hype.
We go to a lot of bakeries, carbs are an essential in our diet, so whenever we're in a new place we try and find the best bakery. We were in Castlemaine for the day and did a bit of a walk over at the gold diggings. Johnny B was apparently the place to go for pastries and pies, so that's what we did.

We got a ham cheese croissant, an escargot, the orange poppyseed cake, the apple shortbread, and the eggplant and lentil pie.

The pie was so good it was demolished before we sat down at the park next door. The croissant had so many layers of lamination and you could see each flaky golden edge. The dough had proved nicely and the inside was soft and airy (ignore that other reviewer that said croissants are puff pastry 🤦‍♂). The escargot was not as flaky and airy as the croissant, still a good pastry but could do with more sultanas.

We saved the apple shortbread and the cake for the next day, and they were still fantastic specimens of good baking. The apple shortbread had a nice short pastry that melted in your mouth but still held its shape when you bit into it and the apple mix was cubes of soft apples with sultanas. I prefer a bit more spice in my Apple mix, but this one relied more on the flavour of the apples.

The orange poppyseed cake was moist and had a good orange floral flavour, it wasn't overly orangey essence-like and we debated whether they had used essence or poached whole oranges...

Would recommend. Would definitely go back. If you go, please bring me an almond croissant because we just missed out!

Total cost $50ish with two cold drinks.

This ham and cheese croissant was equal parts delicate and delicious which made it 100% delightful. I finished my first one and jumped in my car to go back for another. When I returned a third time they had run out. So stock up when you get there 🤤

Just love this place , the beautiful owners who love there jobs & care about quality , love the fruit custard tarts with crispy pastry , organic raspberries & the best apple danish youve ever eaten I promise 👌🩷

The most amazing chicken pie I have ever eaten and then to top it off with their vanilla slice. Absolute heaven

Delicious, buttery pastry, and super tasty fillings. We got the cauliflower cheese pie and the beef & burgundy.

Excellent bakery! So many vego options. It's so fun as a vegetarian to have heaps of different choices at a bakery
