No booking is required to get into the ferry.
The website is very helpful and with the ferry leaving every 20 minutes you can take your time exploring the island.

It was a smooth, easy crossing both ways for our recent trip to Bruny. We got extremely lucky with timing, the staff were helpful and it was a lovely way to start and finish our holiday on the island.

Well Organised ferry transfers to Bruny. It can get really busy and wait times of 1 hour during peak periods.

I didn’t experience a wait time unlike some of these other reviewers, nothing that wasn’t scheduled in the timetable. $38 return for a single car, probably the easiest ferry to drive on & off.
