American River Campground

Tip- if you are going at Easter or public holidays the locals get there early and secure the powered sites so don’t expect one. It is a cute small campground, we loved listening to magpies, swans and owls. The pelicans are gorgeous. Wake up to watch the sunrise from the ramp, it doesn’t disappoint. The oyster bar is the best, even if you aren’t an oyster fan. There is another nearby place for lunch, mainly fish and chips which was great and whiting w salad. We discovered a general store on our last day, there is no signage for this. It’s further around.
You can’t really swim there but if you have a small boat or paddle board, it’s well worth going around the point to North and Brown beach. Great fishing. Loved this special place. The local council cleaners were the only disappointment for the bathrooms,didn’t mop but the bins regularly are emptied

This place is a perfect location for a peaceful few days. The "Iron Warden" did not work so we contacted the K.I. Council. They took our details and credit card over the phone. There are six powered sites but they are very small. Our large van fitted OK but we took up 1.5 spaces. There were two other vans and the powered sites were full. There are other non powered sites and NO water. There is a hot 3 minute shower for $2.00
There are a few options nearby for meals.

Fantastic camp ground by the council. Where in the country can you find hot shower and flushing toilet in a council campground. Equally important the ground is well maintain and has shady spots for your tent. Will come back again. $17/ night for 2 person camping and hot shower $2 for 3 minutes

Nice shaded campsite on the edge of Pelican Lagoon. Powered and unpowered sites available with hot showers but will need to bring own drinking water. Paystation at campsite with docket for dashboard. Independence bike and walking trail runs past campsite for exploring Pelican Lagoon and American River.

Awesome camp site. Clean toilets and showers. Great BBQ/cooking area out of the weather. Very sheltered from the strong winds of your tenting.

Such a beautiful place to camp. The camp ground is just along the river. Beautiful sunrises to wakeup to. Bookings are on the spot.
If you are lucky to find a spot to camp you can book straightaway over there using the machines.
The council staff was pretty helpful, as they booked for us over the phone when the machine didn't work.

There are no designated sites so you are free to book wherever you find a spot.
There are enough benches and dinning arrangements, so you don't really need to carry extra stuff like tables.
The best thing is there are no checkout times...you are free to checkout whenever you want!!

The best campsite on KI, loaded with facilities like powdered and unpowered sites, clean toilets, pay showers, lots of picnic benches, bbq, kayaking, lovely walks, cafe, beautiful views.
The best feature was being able to see Dolphins, Sting rays, pelicans swim from our campsite/tent it self. Priceless experience we had, will definitely be back.

We loved this campground. Easy access to boat ramp pontoon. Toilet facilities were very clean. Loved the pay as you stay ticket booth. Random tree stump in one of the end camp spots caused a few trips and a cut foot. Appart from this it was great value.

Great campsite, meets all our needs, is in a nice location & lovely & quiet. 😊

American River sunrise on Monday 9/11/2020.

This campsite is amazing, right by the river you can watch the wildlife really closely. We were visited by two dolphins during our stay there. Only annoying thing is to have change, a 2$ coin to operate the shower, but the fee of the camping is very low (15$).

Pretty decent campsite, have to find your own spot compared to other sites that have separated camp spots. Still a nice site with toilet and shower facilities, close to the water.

Beautiful little town. Lovely campground on the river. Hot showers, powered & unpowered sites. A short walk to a lovely cafe.

Loved it ! Great views of the American river. The campground also allows campfires. Electricity and showers available (showers $2 / 5 mins. Needs $2 coins)

Neat and tidy camp ground with well maintained toilet block. Camp sites overlook the water and right on a beautiful nature trail.

Amazing campgroud with fantastic views. How many places can you camp for cheap were you have hot showers and wake up to ocean inlet views. A must on Kangaroo Island!

This is my favourite spot so far on Kangaroo Island. Facilities clean. Make sure u have $2 if u want a shower

Somedays of week, there are some one host the Dragon Boat Racing or practice there. I saw the dolphin swam there when I join the Dragon Boat, they were very friendly and quite.

toilets are clean, showers are available, shaded with trees and walking distance to the oyster farm.

Good facilities and the most beautiful view to wake up too!
