The Portland Tram Depot is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, transportation, or simply enjoying a unique and scenic ride. The depot is home to a fleet of restored historic trams, which operate on a 7.4km route along the Portland foreshore and back again.

The tram ride itself is a lot of fun, with knowledgeable volunteers providing commentary on the local history and attractions along the way. The trams are also very comfortable, with plenty of seating and even a cafe car where you can purchase snacks and drinks.

In addition to the tram rides, the depot also has a small museum with exhibits on the history of trams in Portland. The museum is free to enter, and it's a great way to learn more about the city's transportation heritage.

Overall, the Portland Tram Depot is a great place to visit for people of all ages. The tram rides are fun and informative, and the museum is a great way to learn more about the city's history.

Here are some additional things I liked about the Portland Tram Depot:

The depot is located in a beautiful setting, right on the Portland foreshore.
The tram rides are very affordable, and there are discounts for families and groups.
The depot is wheelchair accessible, and there are special trams that can accommodate people with disabilities.

The depot is open year-round, so you can visit no matter what time of year you're in Portland.
If you're looking for a fun and educational activity to do in Portland, I highly recommend visiting the Tram Depot. You won't be disappointed!

Hop-on & hop-off tram running 3.7km along the cliff top adjacent to the town gives a great view & does a round trip every hour between 10am to 4pm.
It's run by volunteers who are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They give a running commentary as the tram runs along at a fast walking pace about the history of the town & things to see.
You can hop on & off as many times as you like for the day. There's a small museum about the tram & area which they stop at but we'd recommend the botanical gardens stop. We spent an an hour strolling through them & walked 19 minutes into town for a coffee & food at Bahloo Portland cafe.

Nostalgic tram ride run by volunteers. Appreciate their efforts to keep the depot open and maintenance of the historical tram. The depot has lots of historical artifacts displayed for visitors.

Initially I thought the tram ride was expensive, but after having done it with friends from Canada, I saw and learned things about Portland I hadn't yet seen or visited, I recommend this to anyone and the Museum although small is great especially the movie about tram travel in Melbourne in the early years. Bravo Zulu Portland Tram

Thank you to the volunteers who run this unique little experience. We stopped in Portland on a day trip and saw the tram going around town - thought it would be fun to check it out.

When doing the tour we found out all the workers are volunteers and they are so passionate about their town.

It's really a unique experience and takes you around most of the sites of portland.

Loved our little trip on the tram today. We didn’t get off except for a quick photo at the end (at the lookout) and enjoyed the ride seeing all of Portland. A great way to see it. Fun for the whole family. The museum is as fabulous too but didn’t leave ourselves enough time to see all of it as we watched the great history video.

This is the first place everyone should go once they arrive in Portland. No questions asked, just go!
The main station for the cable tram ride has some great displays of tramcars, crystals and gems. But the main highlight is the friendly staff and the information you get on this trip.
It takes you through the town of Portland and highlights some of the things to see and do during your stay (hence go there first)
You will see things you might overlook or miss. Plus if you are lucky the drivers are really great at finding some sleepy koalas along the way for you to take some snaps of.
Definitely a highlight of the trip and one for all ages.

Fantastic little gem of a place that is run completely by volunteers.
The gift shop and museum is quite good with a video explaining all about the cable trams of Melbourne and the tram ride whilst not cable pulled was very relaxing and informative.
All in all well worth the visit.

Very interesting and informative. The 45 minute tram ride is relaxing and a a slow pace. The guides are very interactive and know their history. To think this is all run by volunteers bar 1 full time and 1 part time employee is a real credit to them. Well Done

Great place to visit in Portland. Conducter was very friendly and commentary was informative, surprising amount of history in this small town and the tram gives you a relaxed scenic way to see it. Not overpriced either. There's a small museum in the depot too but not a lot to look at there, this closes around the time the last tram arrives back so give yourself thirty minutes or so to check this out. I came on a Friday and was the only passenger for the full round trip.

This place is definitely top of the list of things to do in Portland, brought the whole family along to take a ride on the cable car Tram, which has been lovingly restored and must say what an experience was great to a guide to giving great knowledge of the local area while enjoying your journey and afterwards we got to have a look around the fantastic little museum they have their with an extensive rock gym collection, old vintage car and diorama of how the area used to look in the old days.

We just made it in time for the 3pm tour. The tour takes 1 hour and the guide provides interesting commentary about the history of the area. They will also point out interesting landmarks in Portland. The trams are run by volunteers-they did a fantastic job.

This tour is highly recommended and not to be missed if you are in Portland.

When we got back to our car, there were two koalas in the tree above (the guide pointed this out to us).
