Quaint little restaurant serving a great range of Japanese Don meals and Japanese curry

Book in advance if you want a seat ad there's limited seating, otherwise you could do takeaway.

Had a fair range of imported Japanese beer on offer as well.

Well presented food with good quality to match, its definitely worth coming here to get your Japanese rice bowl fix

It's a nice intimate and cosy restaurant. Ordered for starters Chilli cucumber and edamame. The chilli cucumbers were refreshing with a good kick to it and the edamame were lightly seasoned with some sea salt. For mains we ordered the omu rice and the pork katsu Don. The curry omu rice was very comforting and perfect for a cold wet autumn night with the perfect portion of rice and curry. Will definitely come back. It's worth the trip.

The whole menu is absolutely delicious and of fantastic quality. Having tried both takeaway and dine-in now, I can definitely say that both are great options, although the atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely so I’d recommend if you can. Best japanese ramen you’ll find in Newcastle, with generous serving sizes and good sides to pair with.

Asa-don is a fantastic restaurant with friendly staff and authentic food. Seating is limited indoors, however the courtyard out the back is cosy, and surrounded by some fascinating plants. Service was fast, and the food was tasty at an affordable price. Would highly recommend this hidden gem!

Genuine Japanese food that tastes amazing at a great price. Pictured is the misokatsudon (my recommendation) and the karaage.

Good place for Japanese food. Remember to reserve as it's always crowded and cash only.

Excellent japanese food, have yet to try the sushi but the ramen was great and everyone else's food in the resturant looked good too

I have been here several times... both with friends and my partner. They have such a lovely little place that is tucked away, like a little nook restaurant. The food is delicious and it is one of my absolute favourite places to dine at on king st. The service is always great too! 10/10

Casual dining with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and amazing food. We went on a very cold night, but it was cosy and comfortable inside. The food was tasty, and the serving sizes were generous. I will definitely be back to try other menu items! Some older posts mention that this place is cash only, bit that's not the case any more - they have EFTPOS available now.

This is easily the best Japanese food in Newy. Previously they only accepted cash, that is no longer the case. They don't open all the time, or for long each day. They don't need to, you need to plan ahead. The menu is simple but if you know your food, just ask and they will probably provide. Last visit we had nothing from the menu and everything was perfect.

Absolutely fantastic the minute I walked in, the smell took me back to the small hole in the wall restaurants of Japan. Food was so well done and the care that has gone into it all was clearly evident in the flavours. The pork ramen broth kept me wanting more and was one of the best I've had in the past years. We also had the tempura prawn avo sushi, pork gyozas, agedashi tofu and omu-coro curry all as great as the last. I will definitely be coming back the next chance I get

I stopped into Asa-don for lunch and was not disappointed.
I ordered the Oyakodon which was delicious and authentic tasting. It immediately made me reminisce of my time in Japan.

The staff was charming as was the venue and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The food here is beautiful. Honestly do not know why they aren't busier, I don't understand why Sushuru is busy and this isn't because there is no comparison on quality. Udon is super flavoursome, sushi fresh and gyoza fresh and tasty.

We ordered prawn roll, yasai udon and ton ton ramen. Food was delicious and authentic. Highly recommend this place for who looking for authentic Japanese food. Willing to go back soon. Lots of tables looked empty but I am pretty sure that all of them were booked. Recommend booking a table before you go there.

Small but quality menu mostly of don, udon, tempura, and a small sushi range. The venue is always busy so I recommend booking on peak times but the food is worth it and not too much of a wait. Its biggest downfall is cash only. Staff are very friendly. Highly recommend this Japanese restaurant

An delightful experience in a cosy setting. The food you get here is restaurant quality. The chicken katsu curry is crisp and flavourful with a little touch of spice. The broth in the noodle dishes is packed with flavour that will have you coming back for more.

My favourite Japanese restaurant in the heart of Newcastle, great and fast service and atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable and the food is amazing. Next to a movie theatre so great for a bite to eat before the flicks.A selection of entree’s and main which everyone enjoyed. Salmon & veg sushi, teriyaki salmon rice dish, prawn gyoza, Katsu chicken Surry
