What a surprise find!
I loved the place as soon as I walked in. The interior decor and design was amazing. Amazing details in woodcarvings around the fireplace. You can definitely tell that the owner of this restaurant has put a lot of thought into the place.

Initially I was a bit annoyed at their “rule” where everyone must order minimum of 2 dishes. However, when the food came, I was glad I ordered 2 dishes! It was a warm hearty meal perfect in snowy weather; I felt like I wanted more even when I was already full!

I’d say, the only downside for this restaurant is the fact that it is 3 hours drive away from Melbourne CBD….so it will be hard for me to visit often..

I will definitely go again on my next ski trip to Mt Buller.

Food is delicious and service is top notch. A bit on the pricey side but that's to be expected at a ski resort. Given the quality of the food and fantastic overall experience it's worth the premium you pay

Best chicken dish I have ever had. Table of 4, every dish was 11/10. And the deserts, WOW! The service was so warm and welcoming. Great atmosphere!
We will be back :)

Kaptans is an institution at Mt Buller as is the Pension Grimus bar. The Weiner Schnitzels was as huge and good as ever. The chocolate soufflé wasn’t quite as good as in the past - a bit floury - but still good. Hans Grimus is sadly missed. He really made the place by going around to all of the tables with his snuff and tissues or his accordion. Great memories. We were grateful that Grimus is now allowing non staying guests to book tables but it booked out quickly. They do keep a wait list too. And it’s always hot there so dress accordingly. Enjoy.

Good food in Mt Buller. Not much choices are available and the food and service here is pretty good. Desserts are really good too! Tip: Have your dinner at 6pm when they open because it gets very packed very fast.

The day was filled with fun & laughters - I have never seen them so happy running around, chasing each other without feeling tired but the parents were already down to their last remaining energy. Even the youngest one who normally had afternoon nap was still up and running. When we finally reached our hotel room, I had to settle their hungry tummies. Lucky for us, there was a pizza place inside the hotel itself so one large pizza and they were full.

Both of us, however, have something else in mind. After everyone had shower, we walked to Hotel Pension Grimus which was literally next door - our destination? Kaptans Restaurant which is renowned for its traditional European alpine ambience and excellent cuisine.
◾Lamb belly, quark, black garlic, chimmi churri. I'm not exactly a fan of lamb belly but boy this was something else.. melt in the mouth and full of flavour.
◾Kassler, fried sprouts, braised cabbage and baked apple - to the uninitiated, Kassler is a German name given to a cured and slightly smoked cut of pork (similar to gammon). Suffice to say that I enjoyed each and every cut that I put into my mouth.

Nothing like a glass of the highly rated Philip Shaw's Architect Chardonnay would not help to lift the dining experience. I ordered a side of salad and a dessert for the kids to munch on while we enjoyed the slow yet satisfying dinner. We were actually exhausted but nothing beats a dinner like this.

Great food and service. Had the steak and veal kids meal. Thick and juicy piece of meat. Certainly one of the best in Mt Buller.

Undoubtedly the best restaurant on the mountain. The Grimus family mourn the recent passing of Hans, who established the hotel and restaurant with typical European style. The Schnitzel is a Buller iconic meal, but the smallish menu offers quality hearty meals.

The restaurant is decorated with pictures and objet recalling the history of Mt. Buller, and particularly Hans and his beloved skiing dog Captain. There is a small gemutlich bar, and much to be complimented. Booking well in advance is essential.

Nice place with European atmosphere, schnitzel a bit disappointing (not crispy) for the price.

Well menu is not very wide ranging. Ordered the beetroot, feta and candied walnut salad it would have been good … but it had one rice of feta and maybe 2 small walnuts if that … when I raised that t had just one piece of feta they warmly offered to bring a side of it but it was another soft cheese not feta
