Fabulous view of the bird colony. We waited for the bloke to open the gate at 5:30pm. It’s now open 7 days a week at that time. Be there before the man arrives to look around and walk up to the viewing platform that’s outside the fence. Once inside the fox proof fence you walk with the guide to the electric fence. You stay outside this fence but it’s not far from the birds. Binoculars are a good idea if you have some. But the birds are clearly visible at this distance. The wind was onshore while we were there so the birds had their backs to us much of the time and it smells like a chock pen. 🫤 Still it’s a fabulous sight and it’s free!

We were lucky enough to have arrived just around 6pm (after seeing reviews abt the free tour guide at 5:30pm for free!). Joshua was a lovely tour guide who gave us wonderful facts about the birds. Highly recommend to see them during breeding season! Just check out the info centre at Portland for more info!

This site is free. If I'm not mistaken, it's the only inland gannet colony in Australia. Check at Portland Visitor Information Centre of the time they open the gate, with short information tour to get closer to the colony. Saw a lizard, wallaby and Koala on the short walk. Take binoculars for better experience.

What they don’t say is that you can drive here and see them during the day. You can also see another colony of 6,000 birds out on the island. Take binoculars.

The Portland Point Danger Gannet Colony is a great place to see these amazing birds up close. The colony is located just outside of Portland, Victoria, and is home to over 6,000 pairs of gannets. The gannets are most active during the breeding season, which runs from August to January. During this time, you can see the gannets nesting, feeding their chicks, and taking off on their impressive dives into the ocean.

The colony is easily accessible by car, and there is a viewing platform that offers stunning views of the gannets and the surrounding coastline. There is also a short walking trail that leads to a second viewing platform, which offers even closer views of the birds.

Arrived at 5.30 for the guided tour. Gates are locked behind you so be on time or you will miss out. Our guide was great, answered all questions. There was only a few big chicks left as the season was nearly over. Over all good experience.

Is a bit off the beaten track to find but signed fairly well. Bring binoculars or a telescope for the best view. You need to get out and climb to the viewing platform to see the birds

One of the best birdwatching sites in the country, particularly if you can arrange close up.access.

The area is protected so you can see from distant only, it would be good to take binoculars otherwise watch them on discovery channel. The photo below is 10x times from iPhone.

The birds nest until March. There are two predator fences, an outer 2 m fence with a gate and an inner 1 m electric fence. If you bring binoculars, you can easily see the birds from a small platform at the parking area

Was a fantastic experience to see gannets up close. There is a closed gate but volunteers open the gate monday, wednesdays and fridays at 5:30 pm (be there at 5:15) - You get within 20 m of the colony! The volunteers have fantastic knowledge of the birds and will happily answer any questions! 5/5
