Captain's Galley Fish and Chips

I haven't liked seafood for most of my life. For months, I kept seeing people on local social groups talk about how good this place was. So I finally decided to try it for myself. All I can say is, I hate that I've been missing out for so long. I come back every 3 weeks, when I come to the neighborhood for a bang trim. I am never disappointed. Consistently excellent food (from scratch), friendly and personable service, and the prices are pretty good. I 100% recommend this place!

Absolutely THE BEST fish & chips we've ever had. And we've tried them around the world. The lovely and gracious owner makes everything herself. The fish batter is a very unique recipe (not telling) that surpasses everything we've tried with its delicate and flavorful crunch. And she makes homemade potato chips, which are so fabulous that we recommend getting those with the fish because they are so exceptional. Last but not least she makes her own tartar sauce that is superior to anything we've ever had, even in the most famous or posh seafood restaurants. We asked if she had any jars of it for sale, but alas she hasn't taken that on as another business venture! It's a food cart, but she's created a small, cute covered seating area with heaters. So she's made the best of this major street location next to an old motel. Recommend entering via her driveway from the Eastbound lane. We are looking forward to returning here!

I recently moved to this area and have been wanting to try this place out. So glad I did! Just as the reviews before me say, food is delicious. I got a small fish and chips and wasn't disappointed. I'm not sure if the lady who took my order is the owner, but she was friendly and welcoming. You've earned a new customer!

I always say “next time I’ll take a picture” Whelp I did it only this is a portion of what I got! This is my favorite fish spot! My food is always fresh, tender, flaky… it’s so good! Their homemade tartar sauce is like no other. I literally crave it. I always feel special when they bring my food out to me! Needless to say I love this place.

So I came here the other day for the first time due to a co-worker visiting from out of town that wanted some fish. It is a very small establishment on an empty lot. The menu is made up of traditional things like clams, oysters, chowder, fish-and-chips et cetera. The lady who runs it appears to be the owner and is very personable and customer service-oriented. She is very interested in making sure you have a great experience.

I ordered the fish and chips as did my co-worker. There is the option to get homemade potato chips which are very tasty or get crinkle cut fries which are also very tasty. The potato chips were very light and appeared to be baked and the fish is made of Ling Cod.
I also ordered a cup of chowder.

Let's start with the fish. The fish was of the right dimensions and was breaded with a lite panko-like crust. It was difficult to dip as the fish flaked apart and fell into the house-made tarter sauce. Nice to have it be tender and flaky instead of mushy. All in all it was very good.

The chips. They I believe were baked and are house-made. They are light and not greasy. There is a sort of dipping sauce served for the fries and chips that is akin to a fry-sauce.

The chowder. The chowder is thick, probably from the broken down starches given up by their tuburous donors. The claim pieces are large and tender and there was very little sand as is common with clam chowder.

Well, we came back the next day and tried the fish tacos (delicious) and the captain's plate with the added calamari. I didn't care for the fried oysters or the clam strips but the calamari and fish were good. The shrimp was okay but tasted store-bought (frozen pre-battered).

You need to try this place out. I doubt you will be disappointed.

To the owner, if you are reading this, I ordered a cinnamon/ peach cheesecake but didn't receive it. I will be back to try it out 😁

Finally got to try this place after hearing great reviews from our local social media pages. Everything was so good! Don't skip the clam chowder or fish with fresh chips and house made sauces! Owner and daughter are also great, friendly people.

Anytime we get to this side of town, this is our go to fish place. We ate there on Tuesday of this week, and my wife accidentally left her bowl of clam chowder. She got home, and realized her mistake. She was so sad ( cause it's the best clam chowder in Oregon) WE WILL BE BACK SHORTLY WITH OUR FAMILY. Thank you, Jim and Beverly Lytle

I've ordered the small fish and chips and an order of just the fish this week alone. They are so good! They have the best tartar sauce I've ever had! Fish was crispy and tasty! Service was quick and the man and woman that helped me were great! 10/10

It is good overall, love their clam chowder. Wish Skippers was still around like they use to be. But these guys come close.

Like most things in life don’t judge this book by it’s cover this place is delicious.

I had several friends tell me I needed to Try Captain Galley in Gresham for a while because they know how much I love good fish and chips.

I got a large order of fish and chips and a small cup of clam chowder and both of them impressed me! Definitely the best in Gresham and maybe in Portland but that’s just my opinion.

Best fried fish I’ve had in Oregon! Great service, reasonable prices. We’ll definitely be back.

I have been looking for decent fish and chips without having to go to a sit down restaurant. I found it today with an added bonus of fantastic clam chowder (not cream soup with a couple clams thrown in) the fish batter was just right and had a great flavor the fish inside was real and not some mush that tastes a little like fish.
The fries surprised me as everyone with tasteless greasy fries fight for the honor of having the best horrible fries, this place just delivered great fries.
This is not a restaurant it is a top quality food Cart in a motel parking lot, they do have a small covered eating section I myself took my order home. They packed it well and I got it home with no issues.
Finally the staff when I was there a gentleman sat at the window taking orders and 2 nice ladies cooking and packing the meals.
I well be going back and if your reading this and find yourself near Gresham and like fish I suggest you give a try.

This place is the best sea food restaurant I have been to in a long time without going to the coast for fresh fish and chips or fries their fry sauce is the bomb and the fish is so good it doesn't need lemon and tartar sauce but it is awesome too if you have not tried it you need to stop reading and see for yourself too good for words and the staff is very nice and it's a little bit of a wait so call in your order and my favorite is the captains platter has some good fried oysters and shrimp and the homemade clam chowder Best in the North West!

Best fish and chips I've ever had in Portland! Cute mom and pop place that really feels like home. Give their sweets a try too, cheesecake was very very good!

Went there for a quick bite and ended up being a witness the the staff doing first aide and traffic control after a car accident in front of their place. Even more love for everyone there now. (And the food is great)

Updated review: Back again! As always, I love this place. Their's is just about the only fish and chips I'll eat and I've never not been impressed. And if you haven't yet... get some cheesecake too.

Wow I'm from Wisconsin, home of the Friday night fish Fry's. I found my home away from home. Staff is so awesome and the fish is perfect.... I'll be back every Friday now!

I kept seeing fb post about people commenting how good it was, so I decided to give them a try, and oh my, it was so good. Definitely one of my top 10 now. They're very nice and friendly and the food is usually ready in about 15 minutes or so. I haven't tried their cheesecakes yet, but they sure look delicious.
