This museum houses an extensive archive of history of the area with a large library that has information pre dating the civil war era. The displays have artifacts on how life was in times gone by. The memorabilia includes notable people that founded this area with even a UFO incident that involved a P 51 Mustang crash. A very nice military section to honor all vets. The old jail was built to resemble a medieval castle as a deterrent to crime even though one prisoner tried to escape through the door where food trays were passed through and was used until 1986. We received a very extensive tour of the museum that included the jail.

This Place is amazing, the staff are incredible and so knowledgeable. I have been there several time and attended events here. I am blown away that each time I go I find new stuff I have previously missed. Also almost everytime I go there is a new exhibit. Family friendly and so many unique items and stories. You definately need to check it out.

It's free and it's definitely worth a look. They will also take you on a tour of the historic jail, which is quite unique. Nice displays of local treasures and even nicer folks there to answer your questions.

A lot of Beautiful memorabilia!! Great place to reminisce! Old Jail across the street, built in the 1800's. I was there for class, in an adjoining building.

We were there tonight for the dedication ceremony for Capt. Thomas Mantell Day. Afterward, my husband and I walked through and looked at the exhibits. He remarked how it felt alive. So often, historical societies feel like places where facts go to die. But their exhibits are well presented and displayed in a way that allows our history nerd brains to wander in and get lost.

Such a magnificent experience! I had the day off while visiting the area and Ellen gave me the most wonderful tour! Such a memorable “accidental” stop, I’ll be returning the next time I’m in the area!
