Loved this campground! The sites were nice and large, the fire pit was nice, and the view of the lake was absolutely gorgeous. Quiet, far enough away from other campsites, and the host was so kind, even though we checked in after 10 pm after driving all day. Of course there were bugs, it’s the outdoors. They weren’t awful or unbearable, surprisingly, though we stayed in late October. Also, you can’t beat the price. Definitely check this out if you’re looking for a place to primitive camp in the area!

Great forest service campground. Amenities are limited, no showers, and only pit toilets, but the price is right. There are water spigots throughout the campground within easy walk of any of the campsites. Sites are well spaced out without being right on top of other campers. Even though I was not on the river side of the campground, having backed in to my campsite I still had a bit of a view of the river in the winter time. Campground is right next to the Nuesiok/MST trailhead which made for decent hiking opportunities. Camp host was very nice and was available to answer questions or concerns. Will definitely be back sometime.

Nice campground! For 10 dollars a night this place is great! Bathrooms were clean enough to go into, but are just pit toilets. Host was friendly and campers seemed nice! Bring your bug spray we got chewed alive!

Enjoyed two nights at this sweet little campground on the edge of the Newport River. Loved the large private and shaded campsite, with enough sun to reach our trailer’s solar panels. (Campsite does not have electric hookups). Also really enjoyed the easy river access and hiking trails. We spent a full day fishing and kayaking here, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Campsite was generally clean (though a previous camper had left behind some trash remnants that we cleaned up). Picnic tables and fire rings are starting to show their age. Hopefully these will be replaced sometime soon by the Forest service. The campground has pump water and outhouses (no showers) and each site has a fire ring, picnic table and lantern poles. The host was friendly and stopped by for a chat on our last day. Since we were there in mid October, bugs were not much of a problem and the weather was gorgeous! We will definitely return!

I stayed from Sept 2-6 on spot 14. It was very nice place to camp and get a vacation. The water is nice and calm and the trail is very nice. There are mosquitoes and bugs that bite but soon as I sprayed some backyard bug fog found in camping section of Walmart, I had no problem from then on. I only sprayed it one on the 2nd and it lasted the whole trip.very nice host and very well kept campground. I will be returning soon for another trip.

Nice little campground close to many fun beach attractions. If you are lucky enough to get a site next to the water, you can find all sorts of small crabs and fun aquatic creatures. We easily set 3 large tents up and did not feel crowded in the slightest.

I loved it. Pleasantly surprised by the hammock stands. Nice flat spots to set up tents. A little grill for cooking over the fire. The little shelter kept our packs dry and out of our tents. It's pretty primitive - we were camping in mixed company and instead of a ladies' room, we had a ladies' log - but I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. It was a bit difficult to get to with the amount of rainfall we've had recently, but not too bad.. though I would recommend bringing muck boots or waders if you continue on for the rest of the trail instead of going back to the closest point of entry.

What a wonderful little campground!
Came in late friday just after midnight. Trying to get to cape lookout but got held up by the weather, ended up staying here for 2 night and it was an amazing campground.

reserved campsite #9 11/20 - 11/22. it was only 70 steps to the water (i counted them at low tide). there were a few fellow campers asked if they could pass through the campsite to get the to water (no problems). real quiet except for the squirrels gathering acorns....but that nature. there is enough woods between campsites to maintain privacy, but just enough to know there was someone beside you. Camp site Hostess was extremely friendly and helpful when it comes to fishing..... Looking forward to a longer stay next time.

My girlfriend and I just got back from a wonderful weekend at Oyster Point. Our site was spacious and comfortable, although the ground is much too hard for tent stakes. There is clean water and a bevy of portable toilets available, hosts are nice and pretty much leave you alone, although Tonya did check up on us to make sure we were in the correct spot.

It is pretty darn buggy, but with two Thermacells and some citronella we were absolutely fine. The trail however, was too buggy to even attempt. I thought the flies were going to carry my dog off. There is however a very nice little beach at the trailhead to cool your dog off on a hot day.

A small and quiet primitive style campground. The campground host, Tonya, was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable of the local area. The onsite outhouses were clean and stocked. There are 3 locations on site to get clean, potable water. Each of the 15 sites has its own pros and cons.

There are no electrical hookups, but what fun is camping if you have access to all modern conveniences? There are trash and recycling receptacles on site.

One word of caution, bring lots of citronella candles and bug repellent. You are camping in the woods here folks, and there will be bugs and insects, unless you go in the winter. Some people leave bad reviews of the campground due to insects. You cant rid the forest of insects, that is part of nature.

The picnic tables and fire rings at each site are useable, but are in various states of repair. The onsite host tries her best to keep everything good, but one must keep in mind that the US Forest Service is the agency in charge and their budget is very limited.

My group is looking forward to returning later in the year and camping there again. We had a wonderful time. After dark, the view through the roof of your tent is amazing on a clear night.

Excellent out-of-the-way campground. I was there on a Sunday night in late October, so only.a few other sites were occupied. Thick shrubs provide natural privacy buffers between each site. Site number 9 is highly coveted as it has direct access to the river shore. If you can grab it, enjoy! If you're driving a car, take it easy on the access road; some pretty good potholes have developed.

Tonia was such a lovely site host for our two night bikepacking trip! At one point I fell and hurt my wrist and she allowed me to stay a bit longer than our reservation so my friends could get vehicles to pick me up, which was very kind of her. She also offered me hot dogs to eat! The site was affordable and solid. Bring bug spray if you come, but besides that it was a very pleasant stay.

It was an amazing vacation for my family. Quite area, not overcrowded. It was very affordable with water access yards away. The camp host Tanya was great. She was very accommodating and helpful. It's not far of a trip from Chapel Hill and we are already planning the next trip.

We've been here for a few days. Super nice camp host. Some bugs, not anywhere near as many as we expected from reading previous reviews. Beautiful and peaceful location! Sites have a gracious amount of space. There are toilets and fresh water spigots. There is a trailhead that leads to other trails at enterance.

Enjoyable and peaceful campground that has cell phone service despite it's relative remoteness. Unless there is an event at the local air station like an air show there is rarely anyone here. The sites in the back offer a good amount of privacy, and there are less mosquitoes in these woods than other places in eastern NC. When I first tried staying here it was filled up with Boy Scouts camping for an air show, but when I came back and stayed for a week only 4 other parties camped during that duration. The camp host Tanya lives on the campground, and is very nice and helpful. There is access to the river at two campsites, and the boat landing near the entrance of the campground. If you plan on taking a kayak or boat out try to plan it during high tide, otherwise it's a muddy (but not impossible) walk out to the water. 21 mile Neusiok Trail trailhead is across from the campground entrance. It's a nice trail with lots of animals, but the mosquitoes are worse on the trail than at the campground. When I went it was $8/night - now it is $10/night. The toilet facility is just a vault (no showers), but the water from the spickets is good, clean, and cold. Very little firewood available. Kind of difficult getting to amenities but the roads are clear of traffic for the most part so it's a smooth ride out and in. Great for someone looking to camp someplace peaceful and inexpensive.

All the sites are immaculate and perfect right off the water. Love the shade and plenty of trees to hang a hammock. Tonya is such a sweetheart.

I was able to show up and get a site, although most were already reserved so I’d recommend making a reservation if you can. Nice, clean sites. A lot of bugs so make sure to bring bug spray. The hosts were great and I’d definitely stay here again.

This campsite is a great location! It feels a bit in the middle of nowhere when you are travelling to it, but well worth the drive!
As far as the posts mentioning biting bugs, as an entomologist, it's nature so get over it. No amount of mowing or maintenance will eliminate all the biting insects you find in nature. The only solution would be pesticide use which could severely damage native beneficial insect populations!

Camping= getting in touch with nature = coming into contact with things in nature (including insects)!

Check this place out! Will be going again!
