Maine State Prison Showroom

We happen by this place while traveling in Maine today. We stopped to check it out. And, we are glad we did.

The woodworking projects that the prisoners have made are very good, and the prices are reasonable. There were a couple of large pieces that I would have purchased in a heartbeat had I had a way to get them home.

By all means, check this place out. All proceeds from the sales go back to the prison to purchase material and machines. The prisoners learn furniture making skills that they will be able to use when they get out. Everyone benefits.

A large spacious show room. There's a lot of nice items made of wood. The prices are fair and the quality is great! I was impressed with the furniture and how most of it has dovetail joints whenever possible. If you are in need of a new bedroom set this is certainly worth considering a look. I included a photo showing how to place custom orders.
Their Cornhole sets are well made, including a light up ring in the hole and bags.

Super cool stuff in the store! I was hoping to get some historical information on the building, I found that interesting too, however I was not able to speak to anyone about it due to my time constraints. I will be back to pick up some tables and hopefully a dollhouse for the granddaughters!

Great store! We stopped on a whim and were very glad we did! Beautiful furniture and woodwork, art, candles, tee shirts, and handmade toys, all very reasonably priced. In particular, the furniture was attractive, well made, and priced for less than comparable items elsewhere. The store workers were polite, pleasant, and helpful. We will be back, hopefully with more trunk space!

Excellent surprise store, inmates made items also they wait on you. Great value.. Wish you could order online and get stuff shipped out.

The store offers top quality hand made wood work from the residents of the local cross bar hotel. They are true craftsman.

Custom built items and Reasonable Prices! A Very well sewn doggy toys, wooden paddy wagon with lots of details, achorsaway napkin holder, funny bug trap and garden (terracotta pot) holders made of wood. There are Beautiful Jewelry Boxes, Bowls, Lazy-susans, wooden hampers, you name it they have it including gorgeous lamps, kid toys, laptop holders that open up to place your work inside, so much more! It is a MUST SEE place. We are pretty sure you won't walk out without an item or more. The Customer Service is FANTASTIC, so Helpful and Polite! Go to this fun place and enjoy! What a find!! After seeing this advertised (Down east magazine) and being in the area- we decided to check it out...what beautiful offerings of very skilled craftsman!!! Furniture (full sized to dollhouse!) Birdhouses to bowls, toys to tables! I bought a corn hole scoring post! Prices were incredibly reasonable, and the quality is top notch!! What a great program besides!!! So glad we stopped!! (Young man that was working in the store was very pleasant and helpful too!)

Great looking crafts, I particularly like the bird houses. Excellent prices.there is a public bathroom in the back of the store. Clean and spacious.

FANTASTIC My brother and I spent 18 July's in Friendship and always went to the Prison Shop. I got a hand made sea horse that I absolutely treasured. I have a wooden stool passed down from my Mother. My brother got a wooden treasure chest. A one of a kind place ✨

Nice store of mostly wood crafted toys and keepsakes at reasonable prices. I liked the little lobster boats that looked like all the real ones we saw fishing the maine coastline. It's so good to see the effort in giving the inmates a practical trade for some upbringing use of their time while incarcerated. It's nice store for the public to be able to support their efforts!

This place is incredible! Everything is beautifully made and the prices are excellent. We found the perfect little pink Adirondack chair for our daughter for only $20. Highly recommend for Christmas shopping!

Large variety of lovely handcrafted items. Bought several for gifts and myself.

There was a ton of cool stuff here. I would have bought everything in the store if it was in my budget to do so.

I’m always going to visit and shop here when I’m in Maine. The products and quality is amazing! They were very helpful in customizing some wooden toys that’s I bought for my grandson. It makes me feel good to support the efforts of people learning a trade.

what had been a historic gallery of suffering has become a showroom of slavery!...a must see for those unfamiliar with the Maine prison system and understanding the puritan way of thinking that persists here still!!! remember "The Shawshank Redemption"?...enough said!?!
