South of the Border Cafe

A small, homey-feeling cafe with great food! It was quiet on a weekday morning & the staff greeted me as soon as I entered the establishment. Gives off the feel of eating breakfast at home on a Saturday morning. The potatoes with cheese & onions were 10/10. Cash or check only, so make sure you have either on hand (otherwise the Holiday Station directly across the street has an ATM). Highly recommend this charming little cafe!

Great diner. Extremely friend staff with warm kind service. Food was absolutely incredible. I had the fish (Herring) , eggs, fried potatoes, and toast (pancake). Some of the best fried fish I've ever had and I've had a lot being from Louisiana. First place I visited after we moved were and I can say, we definitely felt welcome. For sure a must if you're looking for peak diner food with one of a kind small town hospitality.

Great breakfast!
I had breakfast at this cozy cafe before taking off on a hiking trip. Service was great, food was great. Bacon was perfectly crispy.

I ordered food here on a Sunday at about 0645 on Fathers Day 6/18/23.

I ordered the meat omelette with fried potatoes, onion, and cheese, with an order of bacon and sausage.

The food is a little pricey for what I’m used to, but it was delicious.

I would eat here again if I was in the area.

We shared an omlette with pancake and the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with fries. All was very good! Disappointed within the 35 min wait to get seated at 10am but it's the fault of an overreaching bureaucracy forcing them to close most of the inside seating.

Food... excellent and hot.
Service...fast and friendly.
Price...love them.
Locals...always fun to eat at a new place and see the locals there....then you know it is good.

Overall a great place for breakfast. They don't overwhelm you with questions. You will get toast. It will be white bread .
Your coffee will be served hot and black.

Breakfast done right-- fish special was clutch! Best value brunch in Grand Marais for sure. Only wish their tartar sauce didn’t come in tiny packets:)

Best breakfast in town. Very cozy little "mom and pop" place to have breakfast. Usually there is a line to get in so be prepared to wait. Portions are good and the prices are too!. Cant wait to get back up there !

I saw the title and decided to check it out. I come to find out that it is an American diner because it is south of the Canadian border. 😂 Excellent breakfast before heading out on the road very friendly and good, quick service.

Hometown feel FOR SURE. No cc or electronic payment cash or check. 100% agree and love that. So bring cash. Food definitely cooked beautifully and homemade small quaint and will definitely be back. It's now our favorite place for breakfast. Keep it up you gals!

Felt like the breakfast diners I grew up with. Hometown service, food was fast despite being busy and precisely as it should have been. Pancake was DIVINE. Recommend highly!

Fresh Herring for breakfast! I don't usually eat fish for breakfast. It was very good! Service was tops. Good value, nice experience. Bring cash, no CC's.

We came with a group of 11 on a busy Sunday morning, they got us in quickly (not together, but we weren't expecting to, due to how busy they were) we were served promptly & food didn't take long.

I had a very good breakfast in this place and the service was great.

A darned good breakfast! Four strips of excellent bacon, potatoes sliced and cooked on the grill, fried eggs cooked just right and buttered toast. What's not to like? All good!
