GOOD golly gracious, have they absolutely surpassed all my even highest expectations in every single area of ratings and more. The food was PHENOMENAL! I got the portabello tacos, which were even better than I remember from the last time I had it years ago at the other Alamo location, which is currently being renovated. The service was incredibly accommodating and kind(!), and the atmosphere is freakin' awesome. After all, there's a life-sized bear and a cow-ch for taking pictures with/on to document the great time spent here. I can't say enough about how delicious everything was and how well we were treated here. This is TOP-NOTCH all around, and if you haven't been here yet, getcha booty on over there!

I embarked on an unexpected gastronomic journey with a group of friends on a late Wednesday evening at Frontier by Alamo in Church Hill. Despite it being close to closing time, we were graciously accommodated - a testament to their commendable service.

Starting our meal with draft Narragansets priced at a reasonable $5 each, we were not disappointed. Our server was generous with the pours, filling each glass to the brim and offering an ideal prelude to our culinary experience.

Diving into the main course, I opted for the Alamo Cuban. The sandwich was robust in flavor, the ingredients well balanced, although the bread was a tad too crunchy for my preference. A slightly lesser degree of toasting would have elevated the sandwich to perfection. Nevertheless, it remained a pleasing dish.

Our party also tried the Southwest Caesar Salad, which managed to satiate even a non-BBQ enthusiast. This was a demonstration of the menu's versatility, providing options that cater to a variety of taste profiles.

A delightful surprise was the cheesy enchiladas, which proved so generous in portion that we took some home. The same can be said for the Pulled Rotisserie Chicken Sandwiches. Our companions reported them to be quite satisfying, delivering on both taste and quantity.

The Texas Trainwreck deserves a mention, not only for its deliciousness but also for its sheer value for money. It truly encapsulates the restaurant's commitment to serving hearty, comforting meals without burning a hole in your pocket.

No meal at Frontier by Alamo is complete without their sides. The jalapeno mac and cheese was a particular standout, providing a wonderful blend of creamy, cheesy goodness with a fiery kick of jalapenos. The mac and cheese, as well as the French fries, received universal acclaim from our group, further enhancing the overall dining experience.

As for the ambiance, Frontier by Alamo offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere, complemented by polite, helpful staff who enhanced our late-night visit. One amusing observation was a random printer in the dining room. Not sure why it was there, but I had to mention it.

In conclusion, our night at Frontier by Alamo was filled with flavorful food, delightful drinks, and hearty laughter. A minor hiccup with the overly toasted bread and the misplaced printer were far outweighed by the positives. A must-visit in Church Hill for those seeking delicious, affordable food in a convivial atmosphere.

Christina was awesome. The cocktail list is one of the most unique ones I've seen in Richmond. Great food, good drinks, attentive service.

Definitely recommend the chili*

We had the three meat platter and half rack of ribs and were very impressed! The collards are the best I’ve had, the cornbread is amazing and the yams are sweet in all the right ways. It feels like there’s a lot of love put in to this food - we loved everything we got and the portions and prices were extremely reasonable. Patrick took great care of us at the bar and made delicious cocktails. We’ll be back to try the brunch and for dinner again soon!

This place was a wonderful surprise! Great service, warm and welcoming (the AC works great, not that kinda warm 😘), and good food / drinks! Frontier by Alamo is going on my, "good food in RVA" list and I'm excited to bring friends and family to this hidden honey hole!

This is such a cool new spot in Church Hill! The atmosphere is laid back but inviting, has a nice little bar and lots of booth seating too. The food was delicious! So many good items to choose from! There are tons of barbecue options but also Tex-Mex type options- such an interesting combo but they do it so well! And of course, can’t leave without getting the iconic pic with the massive life-size bear!

We’ve never had anything there that we didn’t like, everything is delicious! The menu is diverse enough (without being a short novel!) so that everyone in the family finds something they love. We have two kids who are picky eaters, and they LOVE Frontier. Plus the chefs are always coming up with tasty specials: I had the grilled octopus on hominy a few weeks ago and I still dream about it!

Like this place so much, I came back twice in two nights. Even though it’s a bbq place they have great vegetarian options, like the fried chile relleno, nachos with portobello shrooms, Texas caviar and jalenpeno mac and cheese. Servings are big enough to share, staff is attentive and chill, kitchen immaculate. The Grateful Dead was the soundtrack both evenings and the quality, service, and atmosphere are solid and consistent. The taxidermy Bear is the pièce de résistance

One of my favorite places to go in Church hill. The bartender is the kindest and most knowledgeable person I’ve had the pleasure to chat with. I ordered the pull pork bbq with a side of Mac and cheese and it was by far the best bbq and Mac I’ve had. The Mac and cheese had subtle hints of jalapeño and was amazing. I 10/10 recommend the frontier by Alamo!

Highly recommend this local spot. The food was AMAZING- best soup I’ve had in a very long time (poblano bisque special), and delicious wings and ceaser salad. The owner made us feel at home and all service was wonderful. Fair prices and lots of delicious cocktails. Can’t wait to go back

Amazingly fresh taste. Chile Relleno was plated like a work of art. Feta cheese garnish on a fresh, crunchy, perfectly cooked shell, with a smooth sauce. Pulled chicken filling was falling apart tender, well seasoned, with cheesey queso sauce. Rice and black bean side with fresh romaine with pickled red onion an excellent complement. Cornbread moist with crunchy crust. Served with large portion of delicious Sweet butter. Pulled chicken sandwich with large portion of fresh, amazing barbecue, cut pink cabbage, and sweet, smoky sauce. Bun was soft and properly toasted with butter. Christina did a great job serving our table.

Comfortable, neighborhood bistro/bar. Barbecue, Mexican dishes and surprises like the grilled watermelon 🍉 topped with chili powder and pistachio that I enjoyed on a hot summer evening.

I love this place. My favorite are the nachos with brisket. Having Falcon smash on tap is a great bonus too.

Best steak frites I've had in Richmond. Great casual spot for dinner and drinks, the bbq is also solid but I'd recommend the tex mex dinner specials - the stuffed peppers, half chicken, and steak frites are all standouts!

Wow. Frontier was awesome. TLDR good service, great portion size, awesome pork, and very fair prices for food and drink.

We were a party of 4. First, friendly service and cheap drinks. I'd suggest the house margarita! $8 and homemade mix! Second, we got the bbq nachos appetizer. I'm not kidding, this was enough food for all four of us. We almost didn't even touch our entrees! The portion size is huge! And the pork is so good! There are few RVA bbq places that can beat this quality of pork. Very smoky, good flavor, and they actually give you pork. Not fat, but pork. I got the enchiladas and they were incredible (although Ill admit I barely touched them because I quickly got filled up by the nachos). Third, the desserts are great. The Salvadorian quesadilla was really interesting.

Obviously the food is good. With a legacy like Alamo behind you there shouldn't be any surprise. What I really enjoyed was my interaction with Christian! He really made my lunch time experience top notch. Frontier really found a keeper here! Also the bear brings the room together
