I recommend any pastry or bread when thin layers. Like croissant. They are so crispy!! Their soft bread is good too but the crispy ones are exceptionally good. I had pistachio cherry croissant and bread pudding and decide to eat croissant in place and pudding for to-go, and it was a very good choice.

I love bakeries, and I love a good croissant. Richmond has plenty of great options for croissants, but believe me when I say that Sub Rosa Bakery has the best croissants I've ever had in my life; specifically, the Miller's Wheat croissant. The Miller's Wheat croissant is not greasy at all, yet still has so much crispyness on the outside, and the perfect amount of chew on the inside. To this day, I just have not had a better plain croissant than this, anywhere in the US.

With that said, the other options here are also super tasty. Fig & cheese croissant is a family favorite, and my wife and I always get two Pain Au Chocolates for both of us, which has plenty of chocolate without being overbearing.

My wife also loves the cappuccino here and says it's the best she's ever had.

Evrim and Bianca at Sub Rosa made our morning! I'm proposing to my girlfriend today and planned a day of cute surprises. I emailed the Sub Rosa team and they quickly followed up with an email and call to say they're happy to help. They reserved a table and put up a balloon/present I had brought the day before. And, of course, the pastries were all amazing (we had actually been the week before but were thrilled to come again and try something new). Thanks for being so accommodating, easy, and kind with this request!!

It's worth the wait! Their pastries are so buttery and flaky and delicious! Their sourdough bread is top notch. I want to come here everyday!

Among the finest bakeries in the world. Worth a trip regardless how far you're traveling from. The products here feature heirloom and ancient grains freshly milled and baked in an old school wood fired oven. For context there aren't any bakeries in the NYC area that are capable of achieving this rare feat. The result is a uniquely rich and wholesome flavor profile. With masterful hands also comes a crust and crumb that features long lasting satisfying textures that retain their composition for many days after purchase. Make sure to add a miller croissant to any order to ensure you are realizing the full experience. Coffee here also reflects the philosophy of their bread program collaborating with local roasters with defined expressions and honest sourcing, packaged into fine espresso based drinks!

The pastries and coffee from this shop were absolutely amazing. They have a brick oven at the back of the bakery and they were pumping out warm bread and pastries while we sat drinking our coffee. It also has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Make sure to prepare for a line if you’re going during the busy hours. Definitely worth the wait!

Stopped in for a coffee and was overtaken by the wonderful aromas! The croissants were warm, flaky, and down right delicious! Since I work within walking distance I’m sure to be a coffee regular!

Went in around 8:30 AM and there was a long line already.
Got butter croissants and chocolate croissants. Some of the best croissants I ever had, flakey and delicious.
Will definitely be my stop during every visit to Richmond going forward.

The only disappointment was there was a limit of 8 on the number of items we could buy. There were other items I wanted to try but couldn’t.

Visiting from out of town had a latte and a chocolate croissant that we ate in, and picked up some biscotti for home. There was a bit of a line out the door but the food and coffee and friendly faces were well worth the wait.

Our Sunday happy place! We haven’t tried everything yet, but everything we have tried was yummy. We used to go after church, but now we go first😂. Just one more thing to be grateful for! This pesto, roasted tomato ,feta croissant is savory and magnificent! Pretty sure I won’t leave without one unless they run out. Hardworking, friendly staff makes waiting in line a small price to pay. Great coffee too!

The bread and pastries at Sub Rosa have no business being so good - it might be worth the drive from Charlotte alone! Pro-tip: if you know what you want, order online ahead of time so you can skip the line and make sure they don't sell out beforehand.

Sub Rosa has raised the bar for croissants to above the Eiffel Tower. I had the sour cherry pistachio and it was delicious. By chance it was a weekday morning, not long after they opened for the day, and so we had our choice of the spoils and the opportunity to sit and enjoy an amazing breakfast.

My wife and I loved this little spot. My wife said multiple times that it's the best bakery in the US. It definitely was delicious, so much so we went two days in a row. I've never had a currssaint that tasted that good and was that perfectly made. If your anywhere close to Richmond you absolutely need to stop by. I promise you will not be sorry.

Got up early for a Sunday morning to make it to sub rosa. Got there around 8:05 they open at eight. There already was a line. As I stood in line it grew and grew and grew. They are letting people sit inside and have coffee and pastries but they are trying to limit the crowd still! When I took my pastries they were still warm. But we’ve tried so far has been excellent I think there might be a pound of butter in each pastry!

Our Saturday mornings have been forever changed since discovering Sub Rosa Bakery. The allure of their artisanally crafted, leavened pastries and bread is truly irresistible. Every bite speaks of quality, freshness, and an unwavering commitment to baking excellence.

It's evident that there's a lot of heart and expertise that goes into crafting each loaf and pastry, making our weekly indulgence feel both wholesome and special. Given the bakery's popularity, we've learned to plan ahead; ordering a few days in advance ensures we get our favorites and the added bonus of skipping the queue.

For anyone seeking an authentic, health-conscious bakery experience, Sub Rosa is an absolute gem. We're not just regulars; we're unequivocally obsessed. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit!

One of the best croissants I've ever had! Loved this adorable bakery. Not a ton of seating so it's mostly a takeout place.

Efficient and friendly staff. The whole place smells amazing. We ordered a fig & cheese croissant and regular croissant. Both were excellent. For me, the plain croissant was possibly the best one I've ever had. We got the sub rosa classic loaf fresh and was so happy to see it come out of the oven, onto the shelf and then get packaged for us to take away. Very happy experience.

This is hands down the best bakery in Richmond and no one even comes close. They mill all of their own flour and bake everything in their wood fired oven from scratch daily. The bread is incredible and I really enjoy their Polenta loaf. The cinnamon twist is my favorite pastry along with their savory croissants that are rotating flavors based on what’s fresh.

When anywhere near Richmond during Sub Rosa's hours you better pull up. But do expect a line when they open until close. This quaint bakery in Church Hill does things the old fashion way with a wood fired oven that makes all the difference in taste.

My visit around 8 AM on a Sunday found a challenge to park and a line a block long. I knew I had arrived at the right place. They have been on a try list for a few years. With a flight in a few hours I was a bit nervous, but it all worked out as they are just 10-12 minutes from the airport.

The building is an adorable two story with awnings. The neighborhood is one of the oldest in the city adding some charm. However not far is a lot of blight. I felt safe as I finally found my way to their front door after approximately 35 minutes. However you will make friends trust me.

The counter of goodies is immediately as you walk in. The place is small but offers a few tables to enjoy your pastry and coffee, they also offer a few tables outside. The brick oven is the hero as employees work hard to pull off trays of bakery items to replenish the depleting cases. They have a policy of only 8 per customer. Larger orders call 48 hours in advance.

I decided on a few items like a basic croissant, a chocolate croissant, a crumb cake and something with potatoes. I was eating in, but also taking a box out. So I informed them what was for here and also a cappuccino. It's pricey as the bill with 20% tip was just under $40. The service was friendly at the counter.

I did chat with a staff who said their baking process begins by loading the oven with wood and firing around 2 PM for the next day. She jokingly said you would not want to be here it gets real smokey. The restroom in the back was clean.

The pastries came out quickly on real plates with real metal utensils. Thank you! The cappuccino took much longer and was mistakenly put in a paper cup which was disappointing. Every single item was tried and magnificently tasty and fresh.

I left very satisfied that I supported a local business as well as found such a gem of a bakery to recommend. The visit had one small hiccup that I will ignore for the purposes of their overall composite score of a full 5 stars.

Sub Rosa has been in business for 13 years and has always had the same method of making all their bakery items. I will hopefully return this year.

Super delicious and flaky pastries, with both sweet and savory options available. Easy to call in and order ahead. Their bread loaves are also really great. You really can't go wrong with anything you order here! Just be careful because the pastries tend to make a mess wherever you eat them.
