Powell Valley Overlook

A beautiful place to stop and see the fall colors if you're in the Big Stone Gap\Wise Va area.

A stunning view under the right conditions (see photos). A beautiful view/over look under most conditions. Would have to say sunrise/early mornings offer the best options in spring and summer. Daytime/winter with heavy snowfall is well worth stopping for. Wonderful photo opportunities with the fall foliage. At night/after dark during lightening you can capture AWARD WINNING pictorial shots. Have seen several breath taking rainbows here. If you have stopped once before but you love unique photos make it a habit of stopping. You never know what the visual cornucopia will offer on any given day or stormy night.

An incredible view, unless you HAVE to be somewhere and can't be a minute late you need to stop.

Very good scenic view and a great place to take pictures. We stopped by here on our way back from Tennessee and we were able to get a few pictures. Also I got pictures of the names engraved on the walkway post! I thought that was cool so if you put your name on it, find it.

Nice overlook if you are traveling north on Rt 23 between Big Stone Gap and Norton. Great view of the Powell Valley and a nice little asphalt path to take you to the best vantage point,

Absolutely awesome! Beautiful views. Right beside highway so no getting lost to find this jewel! Close to Pipestem Resort State Park! Would recommend this stop to everyone who loves to see beautiful places! There are picnic tables if you want to have a picnic!

Worthwhile and quick stop to take in a wonderful view .

I lived in the area 20+ years before moving to TN and it's still one of my favorite sites to see. Managed to finally take my fiancée there to show her the leaves and how beautiful fall can be up there

Great view of the valley. Low lying fog in the valley paired with lights from the mountain top makes for good photos. Nice spring midnight ride. Perfect stop to stretch your legs. Sprites seemed particularly active that night.

Love going here all year around ..In the fall time it's so beautiful..

I have a pic my dad took of me when I was 5 to 7yrs old. I wanted to take a picture of my daughter there as well. It's beautiful 😍❤! Love the mountains we live in and around!

Powell Valley is a picturesque location, with an overlook accessible from the Northbound lanes of U.S. Route 23. A number of homes, farms, and a church are located in the valley below the overlook.
The valley begins between Powell Mountain and Little Stone Mountain where the waters of the Powell River flow down from the rugged mountains of western Wise County. The immense exposed rock face where Stone Mountain and Powell Mountain come together near Grindstone Ridge to the southeast from the overlook, yields a striking visual change in altitude. Within only 0.8 mile the vertical elevation changes by 2,000 feet ( 610 meters ) across the northern face of the Grindstone Ridge Dome of the High Knob Massif, to mark one of the greatest short-distance vertical elevation changes in the southern Appalachians ( the greatest found west of the Blue Ridge in Virginia ).

Cool overlook to stop at with an awesome view! The little walking path is cool too! Took in the view and a few pics and then back on the road to my destination.

Beautiful view of the valley from this vantage point. While the view would have been generally beautiful, during the rains, when we reached here, the whole valley felt magical. A fitting place worth stopping by on a long trip, or for a snack break.

Absolutely gorgeous views!

It was especially cold the day we passed by here, but being a photographer I had to grab my camera and 24-70mm lens. I haven't refined the photo yet, but I will upload it once I do. I wish I would have arrived at a more favorable time of day. The sun was still somewhat behind the mountains when I was there.
