This place is magical! My husband and I stayed here for our 23rd wedding anniversary. Our accommodations were wonderful, as were the owners. We actually stayed in their guest house, and throughly enjoy ourselves. Antonia is such a sweetheart, very personable. She would text me to make sure all was OK. I felt like we were staying with family. We will definitely be returning. We had zero complaints. Everything was very clean. The bed was super comfy. It was quiet, and so cozy. I can't wait for our next stay. Thank you Antonia for everything!

Beautiful place to get relaxed and back to nature.!! The owners are friendly and very supportive of your satisfaction and enjoyment. The events are just what we were looking for, also. The cabin was very clean and had a wonderful scent that accented our visit! Even the staff were helpful and very friendly. Definitely recommend this Country Retreat for your next getaway experience!

We LOVED everything about our stay at the Creamery. Antonia and Barnie were the most gracious hosts. Beautiful setting, cozy, clean cabin - less than 10 minute drive to W&L. Excellent place for Parents' Weekend.

My husband and I spent a magical getaway at one of the cabins at the Heartstone Country Retreat and South River Highlands recently and we had a marvelous time. In fact, I can't say enough good things about this beautiful country gem!
We loved staying at the Writer's Retreat cabin - it was so peaceful that my husband actually had the chance to do some of the writing he never seems to have the chance to do around our busy home in the city. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch and listening to the sounds of nature all around us. The cabins are thoughtfully situated on the land so that, even though it's just a short stroll between them, it seems like you're the only folks out there. It's the perfect place to decompress from the stresses and obligations of "everyday life". It was amazing to wake to the distant calls of ravens and caws of crows (Having grown up where there are only crows, I never realized that the vocalizations ravens and crows sound quite different from one another until this trip!), and it was delightful to wrap up each day by watching the evening sky change colors while the fireflies illuminated the twilight.
We highly recommend taking the short trek up through the woods to the spectacular clearing with 360 degree views of the Blue Ridge mountains, a stone labyrinth, and pretty metal sculptures dotting the hillside. It truly is a sacred space and brought to mind the energy vortexes of places like Sedona, Arizona. Finally, a timid showing by a local groundhog on the morning of our departure made our cabin stay complete!
When you go, be sure to visit the sacred garden and old barn turned retreat center on the opposite side of the property. It is lovely with ample space for hosting retreats, conferences, weddings, and other events. One of the owners, a lovely woman, invited us to stop by so that we could experience this part of the land and what they have to offer aside from the cabin stay experience. She shared some very interesting stories with us about the evolution of Heartstone Country Retreat and the creation of the hillside vista area, as well as the history behind the cabins and their relocation from all over Virginia to their present day settings.
We can't wait to visit again soon so that we can experience staying in another one of their cabins. It's so easy to unplug here and bask in the natural beauty that abounds in this stretch of the Shenandoah Valley. The only hard part we found was packing our bags to leave!

My husband and I spent 2 nights this week in a Heartstone cabin. Not only was the cabin so picturesque buried in the woods, but the furnishings were perfectly matched to the 1700s, even the doorknobs! Everything was supplied, and even tho it rained the WHOLE time, we just snuggled down, relaxed, read our books, played scrabble, and enjoyed the atmosphere. Our 2 cats loved sitting out on the screened porch to watch the birds. We hope to return on a sunny day!

My family and I stayed at DeHart cabin and were immediately drawn to the land and the peacefulness it provides. My youngest child had a profound connection with the 'state of grace' hilltop which we visited 3 times in our short weekend visit. The views are not only breathtaking but also inspiring. It was the very restorative weekend for the soul and mind we were in need of.

Heartstone Country Retreat is an environment that fills the soul with tranquility and inspiration. They have everything you need to host a variety of different events, including a luscious patio garden, a kitchen space, dining, and lodging. Not only is the space superb, but the owners, Barney and Antonia and their staff are profoundly thoughtful and sincere. When looking for a venue to host your next event, look no further, this place is the one.

We spent 3 nights at the Writer’s Retreat cottage and had a wonderful time. The cottage had everything we needed, including a full kitchen and extra blankets. We plan to stay again on our next trip to Lexington, Va.

We had the most wonderful time renting a cabin at South River Highlands Country Retreat for a weekend in December to celebrate my husbands birthday. The cabin was gorgeous - we have never stayed in a log cabin and it was such a unique experience! We loved the fire stove. Further, for such a historic building the hosts thought of everything in terms of amenities - many more than other places we have stayed. The cabin was clean and well kept. We were only there for 2 nights but it felt much longer thanks so the wonderful cabin and location - so many beautiful hikes!!

We have used Heartstone Lodge twice for yoga retreats. There are no bathrooms on the top level of the lodge, where the dormitory style beds are located. You have to go down one floor. The private rooms are en suite. The cabins are lovely for families. Overall we had a very good experience. We used the kitchen for a lot of cooking. We brought our own knives, as the kitchen ones are quite dull. But Lesley and the owners were very helpful and our guests always enjoyed the grounds and double fireplace!

My husband, Tony, and our dog Brady shared a delightful time in the Highlands Farm cabin. My goal for 2022-2023 is to work on a better work-life balance. We took our first step this weekend by visiting South River Highlands Retreat in Buena Vista, VA. Our very own cabin in the woods. No Wi-Fi, no cell phones, and no television. Just peace and tranquility. The State of Grace Walk, mountains, Chessie Trail, and wildlife was so needed to recharge and reconnect with family. Our little 1775 cabin reminded me that we do not need all that stuff for a fulfilling life. Does some of it make life easier? Yes, for sure, but most of it just makes us more disconnected and lonely. We will be making another booking with South River Highlands Country Retreat. Everything was so wonderfully laid out for us in terms of directions to the cabin, walk paths, restaurants, and cabin instructions. Excellent customer service. Thanks, Antonia!

I am a wedding photographer and recently shot a wedding at this beautiful venue. The layout is wonderful, there's gorgeous views, and the owner's attention to detail shines. You have the best of 3 worlds- a gorgeous barn, an artistic garden area, and lovely views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I'd highly recommend this place for any wedding couple looking for that 'perfect' location for your dream wedding. Photos are ones I shot at the wedding in July/2017. It's amazing!

• Food for your mind, body, and soul •

I was in town for a wedding and instead of staying at a budget chain hotel, I reserved a room in the renovated barn at Heartstone Lodge. I'm typically a business traveler and enjoy what could be expected with an average hotel room, but something made me say - why not, just book the barn and live a little!

Wow - all I can say is that my heart is still smiling from my stay in the Country Tweet room on the 2nd level of the renovated Barn. The property manager gave me a call to confirm my package had arrived the night before and was waiting in my room for me, and gave me a few pointers for when I arrived to the property. There is no signage for the lodge, just a gravel road, free-range chickens, and a barn! I arrived about an hour and a half earlier than check-in, but Leslie escorted me to my room and gave me the way of the property, etc. with no hesitation. I spent the early afternoon on Main St. Lexington and came back to the lodge and enjoyed late afternoon/early evening sitting by the pond reading a book. I had the entire place to myself which was so peaceful.

The following day, I slept in and made some coffee and spent the rest of the morning on the deck finishing my book. Everything is a "pick up after yourself" kind of thing, which seems to be a good system because everything looked neat and kept. Guests can use the mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker which is in a public living/rec space on the 2nd floor of the barn. Later that evening, I met Antonia and she gave me a little more history of the property and invited me to stay another night if my travel plans allowed (unfortunately I couldn't), but offered a complimentary late checkout since my flight was later in the afternoon.

I only saw 2 other couples during my entire stay - everyone was quiet and respectful of your privacy. The views from the property are stunning and the buildings and common spaces are so charming. I wish I could have stayed longer, cozy up next to the fire pit...and had another book because I finished mine while I was there! The bed was SUPER comfortable...I can't remember the last time I slept over 12 hours uninterrupted.

I will certainly make it a point to come back...even by myself, just to get some quality rest and relaxation. I didn't even have time to explore the rest of the 250-acre property. Thank you for the enjoyable stay and for making my heart and soul smile.

My wife and I were able to spend two wonderful nights in the dehart cabin. The cabin was amazing and was far above our expectations. It had so much character and charm. The farm was close to everything but far enough out of town to be secluded. I recommend the hike to the top of the property. It has breathtaking views. We will be back soon. What a great weekend retreat.

I was actually supposed to be in California shopping for a wedding dress for my future daughter-in-law, and that had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. So, my husband and I decided to go to this wonderful place instead. We celebrated our 26th anniversary during the time we were there and couldn't have asked for anything better! This is a very peaceful retreat, and it definitely reset our souls :) Don't hesitate making your reservations because you will not regret it.
