The lighthouse is up a couple big hills, a fun excursion but tiring especially in hot weather, there's a couple benches along the way. The lighthouse isn't spectacular but it's fun to see if you enjoy lighthouses. Right next to the lighthouse you can overlook a graveyard and the island, it's a nice view with a bench nearby to sit.
No cars allowed island. The island is beautiful but expect to walk a lot. There's no cars on the island besides permanent residents and island workers. There's a couple hotels on the island but none of them have pools, hot tubs or even tvs. Regardless, nice hotels for peace and relaxation. Everything is in walking distance just a few hills. There's no real restaurants on the island except a seafood shack and a small sandwich shop, open only seasonally and expensive. There's only one bathroom on the island which is up another big hill a bit away from the ferry terminal. It's a beautiful island and I absolutely think everyone should see it just make sure to wear your walking shoes and bring water to drink. Near the seafood shack There's a tiny beach with tons of beautiful sea glass.
There's a museum at the lighthouse but only open seasonally. I would suggest going the last week of August before the museum closes and not so many tourists.
Overall, 5 stars. Amazing views of the ocean! ❤

The lighthouse and the island are gorgeous. A long day trip by ferry, but well worth it. Take a hike around the island's trails to fully enjoy your time there. And purchase a piece of art produced by one of the myriad artists who visit or live on the island. The lighthouse itself is picturesque and offers a great view of the small community on Monhegan.

The Monhegan Lighthouse, the second highest light in Maine, is operated by the Coast Guard and owned by the Monhegan Museum. Great island views, art works, artifacts, and historical information can be found atop Lighthouse Hill. The moderate hike up the hill takes about 15 minutes from the boat wharf. There is much more to do on the island so make plans to spend the night.

Most amazing view of the entire village from Lighthouse Hill. The Lighthouse also has a historic Museum and Gallery on the premises . A must do on your trip to the island. A painters dream.

I happened tovarrive on the island on a supposedly rare day that the lighthouse was open for tours. It was beautiful to see the view from the top. Recognized as the highest lighthouse with the best view - of ocean on each side. I loved that the lighthouse keepers resident was still intact and learning abiut the long hallway attached between the two so he wouldnt have to go into the elements to rotate the light every 6 hours.
