Block Island Fishworks

Went to block island with the hopes of exploring the salt pond via kayak. The block island fish works is the place. Situated beside calm water piers, the outgoing current gently carries you to into the salt pond. Note: head left away for the bridge when starting. currents are quite strong near the inlet, will take lots of work, skill and luck to exit the salt pond. Do not recommend, open waters are quite dangerous. All the kayaks are open cockpit, so water does splash in. Kayaks and paddles are dry and clean for the most part. The owner is very helpful, assists in lowering the kayak. Also offers advices and weather forecast. Kayaks are very reasonable priced. If you plan on reaching the inlet, best to rent it for half day or full day as reaching the inlet and back in 2 hours is extremely challging if not impossible. Do be careful of water traffic in the pond. I recommend renting out single kayaks, as it is very easy to control. The tandem and triple kayaks have the tendency to capsize in the current.

Block Island has two bait and tackle shops both worthy of a visit. Fishworks coordinates charters with local guides, a good variety of live, fresh and artificial baits that are sure to put you on the fish.
