Lovely spot. I frequented the store when I lived in town, and visited a few times when I moved to Massachusetts and the west coast. My partner and I have purchased about 5-10 books from the store. I most recently visited October 2023- shoutout to the part time employee who suggested two books that I absolutely enjoyed!

Don't ignore or forget their basement. We found some decent finds here. It also, of course, largely depends on what you're into, although if I might say; they seem to have something for all people(s) here. Good searching!

Brattleboro is blessed to have so many used bookstores in a town of its size. Brattleboro Books is, to my knowledge, the original one here. There is an extensive collection of all genres, with a pretty impressive collection of theology, philosophy, and science — impressive given its lack of proximity to a major university. I found an original English edition of Gabriel Marcel here and for those of you who know who that is, it’s a hint as to the hidden gems you can find here.

I grew up in Southern Vermont and moved to Atlanta in 2018. In early 2023 I made it back home for the first time in 5 years. As a lover of books I knew I had to stop in to check it out.

The store is comfortable and visually stunning. There are many shelves loaded with desirable titles. Prices are reasonable. In fact, I found a hardcover of Darkness at Noon for $12, and the cheapest you can get it online is for $49. Additionally, I picked up a hardcover of Tacitus' Complete Works for $15, while the cheapest one I could find online was $72.

I will make it a priority to stop in every time I'm in the area. The owner was a pleasure to talk with as well.

I always leave with a few new treasures. Awesome place to book-hunt and find new gems! A book lover's dream!

To those of you who are saying the books are overpriced, that ain't so. I worked in a library for 3 years, where I was constantly checking for the replacement prices of books, so I developed a pretty good feel for the cost of a book. Gheesh, in many cases, it's a book I myself remember researching for my job, and I know the price off the top of my head! Altogether, these books are priced according to their value. You might get an underpriced one at a garage sale or a Goodwill, where nobody knows how to research books, but that's a gamble and you could wait for years for an accidental deal like that. If you want the book now, then these books are priced correctly and are the best you'll ever find in a bookstore, either brick-and-mortar or online!

Public library book sales can afford to be dirt cheap because they're just trying to get rid of excess books and it's either practically give them away or dump them. Also, your public library doesn't have to make money - it is funded by your tax dollars. Book stores don't run on the same logic, so they can't afford to give away their books for a few bucks here and there. That is why library sales underprice, but actual book stores price correctly according to the going value.

I was visiting from Brooklyn—a haven for used bookstores—but even still, Brattleboro Books is one of the best bookstores, period, I've ever been to! I walked away with something like 15 treasures (beautiful editions of rare or out-of-print or eccentric books)—and that was me holding myself back. Also, the owner seemed very kind and friendly.

Perfect used bookstore in the middle of Bratleboro, the kind you don't find much of anymore. Wide selection of topics very well organized. I enjoyed their reference and language section and found a hard to find Irish history book as well. The owner is a great guy to talk to.

This family owned bookstore is a gem. You can’t not find something to read, gift to a friend or family, or just peruse. Worth a stop anytime you’re in Brattleboro.
