Clean shelter. Charge your phone in the white box next to caretakers porch. Privy is a short walk down the red blazed path.

501 Shelter - Orderly, clean, well-taken care of, & a kind, if misunderstood, caretaker.

I stayed a night at the 501 shelter in August of 2018 during my AT thru-hike. "Borderline" is the caretaker of the shelter and upon arrival he welcomed me and asked questions. At first, I was irked by his interest and unsolicited advice ('better to sleep in the shelter than by the road', 'no alcohol in the shelter', etc.)

But his true colors of care and kindness showed when he DROVE me & other hikers to get pizza for dinner, offered to bring us our 1000-mile-mark celebratory cold sodas as he was doing trail maintenance near that spot, and he even SLACK PACKED my tramily and brought our backpacks 23 miles south along with grapes and cheese as a gift.

Borderline is a wildly generous person, and he remains one of my all-time favorite trail angels. Be patient and you'll see.

Great shelter right off the trail. We were lucky to have it to ourselves and of course we ordered pizza to the shelter.

Great enclosed shelter. Good Google Fi signal here. Pizza 🍕 can be delivered. Water at house is on. Didn't test electricity. Two picnic tables. Good tenting and hammock spots. Amazing skylight in shelter!

Only for traveling hikers. I don't use shelters just the camp sites around them since I don't hike very far. There is designated camping about a 1/2 mile north. Someone who works with the Appalachian trail kindly recommended we stay there. There is cell service and a spring. So if you are taking is easy it's a good option. Don't twist an ankle and good luck.

Especially nice at the end of a hiking day in below-freezing weather. Huge thank-you to the folks who maintain this place.

I stayed here during my 2019 LASH AT hike (Harper's Ferry to Katahdin). Borderline the caretaker is actually kind but has an approach that seems combative and invasive because he needs to determine 1) if you are actually a thru-hiker and 2) if you have alcohol (prohibited here). If you don't meet these conditions he needs to ask you to move on. His demeanor is the clearly the result of dealing with problematic behavior in the past.
