As longtime patrons of Cavey's, we were heartbroken when they announced their closing in May 2019. But when Geno Auriemma (head coach of UCONN women's basketball and part-time restaurateur) bought the restaurant, I remember thinking, "If anybody can pull off a second act for this venerable instutution, it's Geno." With a redesigned menu and redecorated interior, Cafe Aura opened phoenix-like later that December.

My wife and I eagerly tried out the new restaurant, and I have to confess that we felt that they weren't quite hitting the mark in their first few years of operation. It certainly didn't help that they opened right into the onslaught of COVID, although they did resume a limited take-out operation as soon as they could. But a few more years later, Cafe Aura appears to have hit their stride and be on top of the game, and have earned their status as a fitting heir to their legendary predecessor.

Although we've dined at Cafe Aura 3 to 4 times per year, this review will specifically cover our Mother's Day 2024 meal. Appetizers included calamari and Caesar salad. The calamari was crunchy and sweet with a clean, clear flavor, and accompanied by a nicely spicy marinara dipping sauce. The Caesar was highlighted by crisp romaine coated with a classic creamy dressing, crunchy garlic-infused croutons, and topped with generous shaved Parmesan. Entrees were lasagna bolognese (a generous slice, the sauce a flawless balance of creamy and meaty), grilled sea bass (firm yet flaky fish grilled to perfection and seasoned nicely), and a 12 oz. NY strip (aged beef done textbook medium rare with sides of fingerling potatoes and grilled baby carrots). Desserts encompassed tiramisu, creme brulee, and canollis. All in all a great meal, executed and served with excellence.

I should mention that during the main course, executive chef Erminio Conte stopped by the table. When I replied, "Wonderful" to him asking me what I thought of the lasagna, he responded, "Of course it is," and then added, "You know, it's the simple dishes that are the most difficult to get just right."

If I can find any fault, it may be that Cafe Aura ain't cheap. But the old adage that you get what you pay for is amply illustrated here. As was Cavey's before it, Cafe Aura is our go-to for special occasions.

As a big Uconn fan for 30 years and Italian food lover dining at Cafe Aura had been a goal of mine and finally got there. Cafe Aura did not disappoint. My mom and I went for Mother’s Day and not only impressed by the food but the ambiance and service. It was very clean and modern inside. Our server was attentive and very professional.

We had the mussels to start, they were fresh and the sauce it was in was incredible. The grilled, garlic bread on top was the perfect way to use to dip into the sauce.

Our entrees were the cacio e pepe and the black sea bass. Both excellent with great flavor.

The cheesecake was fresh and very light.

Overall, great experience and can’t wait to be back.

We went here for my Partners annual Company dinner. The food was absolutely amazing. One of the appetizers we had were dayboat, scallops wrapped in very thick cut bacon. The scallops were cooked to perfection. I can’t say enough, how tender the scallops were. They melted in your mouth. The rack of lamb was cooked to perfection a perfect medium rare also had stuffed mushroom caps that were amazing, we had the chocolate mousse dessert which was fantastic. The outside shell was a dark chocolate ganache, and the inside was all the flavors of tiramisu along with a chocolate mousse. Chicken français was served over a bit of mashed potatoes and a side of sautéed spinach with slices of perfectly tender cooked garlic. I cannot say enough about this place. Definitely go with an empty stomach so you can try out as many things as you can.

Nestled in the heart of downtown Manchester, Connecticut, Cafe Aura offers an exquisite dining experience perfect for celebrating special occasions, such as anniversaries. Nestled in a renovated building, Cafe Aura impresses patrons right from the moment they step through the door.

The ambiance of the restaurant is elegant yet cozy, with a touch of sophistication in its decor. The renovation of the building is indeed noteworthy, as it seamlessly blends modern elements with classic charm. It's evident that attention to detail was a priority, and it certainly pays off.

A highlight of Cafe Aura is undoubtedly the bar. With a fantastic selection of drinks and a welcoming atmosphere, it sets the perfect tone for an unforgettable evening. The Blood Orange Martini, in particular, stands out as a delightful choice, perfectly balanced and refreshing.

As for the food, Cafe Aura truly shines with its authentic Italian cuisine. We indulged in a variety of dishes, each one exceeding expectations. The Risotto was creamy and flavorful, while the Lobster was cooked to perfection, showcasing the chef's skill and expertise. The Beet Salad provided a refreshing contrast, and the Calamari, sourced fresh, was a true delight for the senses.

Furthermore, the wine list at Cafe Aura is extensive and well-curated, offering something for every palate. Whether you're a connoisseur or simply looking to enjoy a glass with your meal, you won't be disappointed.

Overall, our experience at Cafe Aura was nothing short of exceptional. From the impressive renovation of the building to the impeccable service and delectable cuisine, every aspect exceeded our expectations. Hats off to the team at Cafe Aura for creating such a remarkable establishment. We look forward to returning for many more memorable celebrations in the future.

We are somewhat recent transplants from Charlotte NC to Manchester. Went to Aura to celebrate my birthday and it absolutely did not disappoint! Salmon was excellent, short rib ravioli outstanding and the chicken parm probably the best I have had anywhere. Loved the olives, bread and parmesan served when we were seated. A very nice touch. Atmosphere was casual elegance and decor soothing. Excellent service and short wait time for drinks and dinners after ordering. We will absolutely be back. So happy to have found this local jewel!

We went out for a very early dinner before the crowds got there (covid concerns in mind) and had a delicious dining experience. The octopus and 3 beet salad appetizers were delicious. We both opted for the off menu specials. I had the pink snapper with shelfish, and she had the pork chop special that she couldn't finish. Both were amazing dishes 😍.

From the front door greeting to the "please drive safely" at the end of the dinner everything was top notch. The Minestrone soup was fantastic. You were left to add salt and pepper to your taste. The Arancini was fantastic, I would have liked a little bit more crisp on the outside. The lobster gnocchi was great, at first my wife wasn't sure she had been served enough; however, the thick rolled gnocchi were more than satisfying. I opted for the Risotto of the day, today it was a Saffron Risotto with a Veal ossobuco. Flavorful and we'll enough veal to make even the largest of appetites not go home hungry.

We’ve had dinner here a few times and have always had a good experience. It’s easy to get to. There’s parking on the side and back of the building There’s also street parking. They have dining room seating as well as bar seating. The table are spaced apart and doesn’t feel like you’re on top of the table next to you. Very nice atmosphere. There’s a nice amount of choices on the menu and our food was really good. The waitress was friendly and attentive. We made reservations as it can get busy. Definitely recommend

I wish I could give this outstanding restaurant 100 stars.
Have you ever eaten somewhere so phenomenal and delicious that you actually felt more and more sad as the meal went on because you live hundreds of miles of away and can’t eat there all the time?
We were in route to Boston and running late to our reservation, unsure on what time we would make it. We called to make sure it would be alright to arrive a little late. The kind lady who answered was so sweet and assured us not to rush, just be sure and drive safely, she would keep our table open no matter what. She was just as delightful when we arrived and was happy we had found our way and made it safely.
Then our lovely server appeared. Kelly was so full of spunk, warm and friendly as well. She helped make some suggestions as the menu was full of variety that we were having trouble deciding.
I started with the best created cocktail I’ve had in a while (Fig Martini). I tried to glean the recipe from her, as it was so remarkable.
My husband always chooses meatballs for a starter. I’m usually not a big meatball fan, but these were the best I’ve had. I wanted my fair share of them and that phenomenal sauce.
Meanwhile, he normally won’t touch the bread that is brought to the table, but he also wanted his share of that.
Then we shared a watermelon salad that was so refreshing with an amazing flavor profile.
Our main courses were also out of this world delicious, not to mention beautifully presented. My husband said it was maybe the best piece of fish he’s ever had.
Along the way the manager came and spoke with us and was so very friendly and engaging.
We were asking about the history of the restaurant and he informed my sports obsessed husband of who the celebrity owner was, that was a real fun fact for him! I wasn’t aware of that name, but as soon as we got in the car he made sure and find me some clips to listen to. Ha.
After the manager checked in on us, the chef came over as well to see if we enjoyed everything. That was a resounding-YES. He also, was just so friendly and seemed to genuinely want to know his diners and make sure they were happy.
At this point we were almost pinching ourselves wondering if we had stumbled into another dimension. Everything was so perfect and everyone was above and beyond friendly and welcoming.
We dine out a lot and my husband travels extensively for work and has eaten at many, many restaurants.
This is top notch, top of the list, one of the very best dining experiences we have ever had.
If you live in the Manchester area, I’m extremely jealous as you have this gem to enjoy. We will be talking about this meal for a long time, and will for sure be back anytime we are in the area.

My family of four enjoyed a delicious meal here on Easter Sunday. We had a really hard time what to select as there were so many delicious options....so we'll be back! It has been challenging to find a nice, upscale restaurant within 30 minutes of UConn Storrs. I was listening to the Women's Basketball game one night and one of the commentators mentioned Geno's restaurant. I looked it up and made my reservations through their online reservations; so easy! The ambiance is very nice and the staff was quite attentive. I have nothing bad to say. The wine list is amazing. I tried the flight of wines, which was pleasing to my palete and my husband had two different red wine glasses. There is plenty of parking, too. The only thing I wish they had was a hotel so I could enjoy some more of their wines and walk upstairs to go to bed....LOL. Gooooo Huskies!!!

If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would. I got take out one evening and decided to have a dinner party with 6 adults and there was so much to go around and everyone was blown away by how delicious the food was. I ordered the seafood salad Ceviche, Watermelon Salad, Black Truffle Gnocchi, 1/2 Tray of Caesar Salad, 1/2 Tray of Rigatoni Vodka and their Tiramisu. As everything was spectacular, we were all SO impressed with the black truffle gnocchi and rigatoni vodka. I could honestly say it was the best I’ve ever had !

First time at this amazing eatery and we were very impressed. All aspects of this dining experience; ambiance, service, food quality were top shelf. Thoughtful menu with all items prepared with care. Food presentation is outstanding and all items proved flavorful.
Drinks? Well crafted and generous. The Aura Manhatten is perfect. Wine list? You will find great selections from all over.
We started with the scallop and calimari apps which were both excellent. Next up the beet trio and grilled hearts of romaine ceasar salads, again excellent. Entrees of veal Marsala and the veal chop Valdostana further proved the chef knows what he is doing. Both carefully executed and full of amazing flavor. I asked for risotto as a side for my meal and they accommodated with a champagne strawberry version which can only be described as pure "yum". We topped this meal off with pistachio cake and an apple tart both of which further delighted. All around perfect dining experience and our server Erin did everything right to insure we never wanted for anything. A friendly visit to the table by both the Maitre'd and the Chef proves this staff is out to win. Well done Cafe Aura! We will be back for more of this!

We love to find new places to go for date night, but we keep finding our way back to our favorite place, just a bonus that it is so close to home. We have tried nearly everything on the menu, the octopus appetizer is one of our favorites. The specials are always different and never disapoint. Chef Erminio is a great host and has yet to disapoint.

My parents and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at Cafe Aura. The hostess and bartender were very attentive and kind and the food was wonderful. I had the Cacio E Pepe pasta which was beautifully cooked and just enough to leave me satisfied. My mom had one of the Flatbreads that I tried as well that I loved. My father said his salmon was cooked to perfection. The Baron de Ley glass of white wine went well with my pasta.

I plan to come back and hopefully spot Coach A!

We were celebrating our 43 wedding anniversary. We wanted someplace special for our dinner. The greater was awesome. Our waitress was fabulous. We started with the Aura old fashioned and the fig cosmo. Excellent! My wife had a the watermelon salad and I had the octopus salad. Again, delicious. My wife had the salmon dinner which she loved. I had the Red Snapper dinner. The mussels, clams and sauce were amazingly flavorful. The red Snapper tasted great but strangely was hard to actually cut. I expected a flaky piece of fish but it wasn't. Our waitress finished our meal with a nice dry complimentary prosecco. All in all a wonderful 43 wedding anniversary. Thank you Geno and staff.

Went for my wife's birthday on a quiet Halloween evening. Food, atmosphere and service were all great! We were fortunate enough to meet Mr. A himself! Best Italian food and wine selection for miles!

The food is delicious, everything is fresh and cooked to perfection. The service is a group of attentive, friendly, and polite people. If you have never been and want to try a new place, try Sunday brunch, but make a reservation, it is popular. When you’re ready to try a new place for special occasions, this is it, the dinners are amazing.
