My experience with Newark Bike Project was entirely positive. I called them earlier last year when they were in the middle of moving to get advice on a used bike I was looking at buying from marketplace.

The owner Dave went above and beyond to give me advice on what to look for and was very knowledgeable and kind. Lucky for me his advice helped me avoid purchasing a bike in not great condition.

It’s not often businesses will go out of their way to help even when it’s not making them money.

Thanks for being one of the good ones NBP!

I've bought a few used bikes from here, and I've taken bikes here to be worked on several times. These guys do a great job, and it's affordable ($10/hr, at time of review) and a way to learn. Make sure you ask them questions about what they're doing, and they will really teach you how to care for your bike. The mechanics are solid; I've had really good experiences with Josh and another guy, whose name I can't recall (bigger, bearded dude, musician, and a big fan of 80's movies). Be sure to tip them.

The volunteer staff at Newark Bike Project was able to get me back up and running quickly when I came in with a bent wheel. It was too damaged to repair, and the found a nicely priced replacement set and swapped out the cassette in no time. Highly recommended.

Bike rides better than before with the new wheels.

The best service center one could ever find, I came in one day to take appointment and the person over there said I would be charged $12 and on the day of appointment there was other person who helped me in fixing the bike, he estimated it to $17 and when I asked that the initial person had given a quote of $12 he immediately reduced it $12 without any hesitation. The person who helped me was so good and talented in his work, he had done the rework with utmost patience. Huge respect to Newark bike project

I can not say enough good things about NBP. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Literally will fix your bike and take time to explain/teach you the problem and how to fix it. Mike, Josh and entire staff will never lose my business!

Different business plan? Absolutely when the customer gets to apply the price on the used refurbished bikes and service that's offered here. BTW there's no charge for air.

the staff are all very professional, knowledgeable and helpful. I had just bought a used bike which needed extensive repairs. I was a "walk-in" and they were not too busy and it was one of the days they do some "charity" pro bono work. They repaired EVERYTHING on my bike right there and then and only charged me for the parts! My bike went from non-rideable disaster to dream in a couple hours! I was stunned and needless to say, very grateful! I even returned with my GF's bike a week later and they did the same thing! An amazing place doing amazing work! They have a large selection of refurbished bikes too! Thanks Guys!!!!

I never write reviews but I had to for the Newark Bike Project! Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable with lots of technical skill. They are very COVID conscious and take measures to keep everyone safe. Their services are super reasonably priced and I love their mission. I am so thankful this business has stayed open during quarantine!

Very knowledgeable and helpfully. They really know there bike stuff. Plenty of bikes to purchase and everyone is friendly. This is the place to go to take classes if you want to learn how to fix issues with your bike. Dave, Katelyn , Josh and the others are great!!!

I was told about NBP by a friend from church. They would rather have older bikes get fixed up and out on the road than in the trash or a landfill.

They encourage you learn, and provide folks that volunteer to assist you in basic repairs. I came in with a flat tire, and Tanner (who is an *amazing* volunteer and a whiz with about every tool I've seen used) basically answered every question I could ask, with tool in hand, ready to help.

I left with:
* Repaired tire
* Straightened derailleur
* Adjusted brakes
* Fixed "shift deck" (not sure if that's the right term)
* A _much_ better appreciation and understanding of how to maintain my bike

Again, I can't thank these guys enough, and Tanner in particular. Great bunch of folks!

I will *definitely* be back, and will recommend this place to everyone I speak to. You should too!

I was there twice recently to donate bikes. It was hoppin'. Lots of bikes going out the door. If you need a bike, consider a visit. If you have an old bike in the garage you are not using, donate it. Their mechanics may be able to convert it to useful transportation and find a buyer.

Amazing staff who help you or show you how to fix your a bike. Had 3 international students last year who were able to buy used bikes and then return them at the end of the school year. Much needed service in Newark.

One day I wandered into the Newark Bike Project to see if I could get some air in my tires. I am so glad I did.
The guys asked me when the last time I rode the bike. I told them it had been a while. Wouldn’t you know they offered to check over my bike right there on the spot. It is a good thing they did because the breaks on the bike were bad. If it wasn’t for the Newark Bike Project, I could have and got into an accident because my breaks were bad. They saved me.
Tanner immediately went to work and fixed my breaks, my gear shifter, trued up my wheel, etc. He was very understanding about people from diverse backgrounds with different abilities.
Thank you Tanner. Thank you Newark Bike Project.

Bought my used bike here a few months ago (a Trek Antelope 820). Came back to get help with replacing the tubing, which had torn, and tires, which were worn with dry-rot. Staff were incredibly generous with their time, knowledge, and resources. Gave me a 50% discount on brand new tires ($14 each usually) and didn't charge for the used tubes ($5 usually) since I had bought the bike from them with the worn tires. Also threw in a used kickstand which they helped install. Best part was that they taught me one-on-one how to replace the tires and tubing myself, diagnose potential causes of tube tears, and also how to adjust the alignment of my brakes. Even though I spent 2.5 hours in the shop, they only charged me for 1 hour of shoptime ($5). Bottom line, staff were just really great people with an awesome mission to empower more bikers in the Newark community and promote sustainability both by reclaiming used bikes and supporting bike commuters. Excited to come back at some point and learn even more!

If you need good advice, a random part, or a helping hand, this is the first place you want to go for your bike.
Each trip has left me a bit more knowledgeable about bicycles and didn't drain the bank account.
I'd encourage attending their open workshop nights when your bike needs a little love, or stopping by for something a little more unique than a cheaply made big box store bike.

Great customer service on the spot very helpful and knowledgeable mechanics, I brought a used MTB santacruz bike to add some air to the marzocchi fork which requires a special valve adapter, 2 mechanics knew a lot about MTB, they helped me on the spot and checked the bike quick visual inspection. I will bring the bike for a tune up next time.

This is a really great place to get hands on knowledge of how to fix your bike yourself. There is a great selection of cheap used bikes and various parts. The place is run by volunteers and they are all really willing and happy to help with any problem. It is a really great place to walk in an ask anything and you will get a good, in depth answer

Amazing place. Really take their time to help you repairing your bike, even though I did not buy my bike there. Replaced my tire and chain for basically no money (which is nice as a college student).

Brought my girlfriend's bicycle in. Rather than just taking it off my hands and leaving me sitting in the lobby like most bike shops, instead they handed me a wrench and taught me what was wrong with it, what each part was called, handed me diagrams of how it looks assembled/disassembled, and told me how to get to working on it!

Two hours later, she was road-ready and in much better shape! It cost me only a few dollars, and I know so much more about bicycles now! I've started volunteering with them, and they've taught me a lot about bicycles.
