Always a favorite getaway. The Trace is paved 2 lane and beautiful in all seasons. There are plenty of pull offs for scenic views, nature, hiking, biking, photos, etc. You’ll come across bison prairies, elk and bison ranges, the Iron Furnace, both north and south visitor centers, and the old homestead.

We enjoy the history and have many ancestors buried in the small cemeteries scattered all over, so we like to explore them when we see them down the side roads.

The kids and dogs like tromping through the random creeks and streams along the way and picking up the blue slag that can be found near the lake.

The Forest Service maintains this spacious and beautiful isthmus. Camping, hiking, boating, kayak rentals, extensive visitor center historical displays, and nature programs available, some for a small fee. Elk and Bison range—visit early or late, critters nap in the daytime. Take bug spray but in May we were hardly bothered by flying insects. Many waterfront spots with hookups. Be sure to check site conditions because not all are paved. Dogs allowed on trails. Nicest hosts we ever met!

Beautiful and peaceful scenery all around! We drove all the way to the top from Dover, TN and the amount of wildlife we saw was incredible. Plenty of eagles, great opportunities for bird watchers. Would also be a nice place to have picnics or lunches, as there were many stops with those designated areas. Would highly recommend the planetarium. It was very informative! Lots of great places to take photos, and to learn about local history.

We didn't get to see the red wolf, but for a very good reason. She was tending her new pups! The 2 Bald Eagles were standing proud and almost like they were posing for a picture.

Very clean, beautiful scenery, and tons of Elks and Bison to see! Even got to see some turkeys! Glad we made the stop on our trip across to the west coast! The Golden Pond Visitors Center has the larger gift shop and is also the planetarium.

Me and my father go off grid camping. This is 1 of our favorite spots. My uncle passed away a few years back, and this is where we spread his ashes. We call it Ole Joe Holler in his memory. Very peaceful and relaxing.

So much to explore here. You can enjoy paved roads, some that are not, and some that are super rowdy. We had a great time checking it out. Found a cool area to swim in. Map recommended since you won’t always have cell service. Lots of tiny roads to explore. Bison were fun to see as well. Clean restrooms at visitor center and energy lake campground where we stopped.

Pay the $5 to see the bison. It was spectacular!

Staff at visitors center were very helpful.

July 2014 - We loved visiting, and despite the sweltering heat of summer, the beauty was absolutely breathtaking.

The quiet stillness was a much-needed respite from the multi-day convention we had just attended. The greenery and lakes were serene.

We snacked on meats, cheeses, and crackers, which made for a delightful impromptu meal at one of the picnic areas.

Even though it was hot, the overall experience was so wonderful that it didn't detract from our enjoyment.

I highly recommend a visit if you're on a road trip, looking for a place to relax, unwind, and appreciate natural beauty. A well-deserved five stars for this Kentucky gem!

Had a great time got lost and someone helped us out the map they provide is incorrect and that can be dangerous if your not careful! There are some amazing trails here but they need to remark them better than they are now! All in all a awesome place to ride!

What a great recreational area! There's everything from homesteading to Buffalo. You can camp, swim, and boat as well. We spend a lot of time here all year round. DO NOT SPEED! 🙂

About 55 RVers stayed at Colson Hollow group camping area. It is such a beautiful area right on the river and a great home base to explore the whole area! You will need 10 or more people to reserve the area.

This is such a beautiful park. There is so much to do here. Fishing, Bike trails, walking trails, 4x4 trails, boating, camping and so much more. You could spend a week here and never run out of things to do. There is a beach to swim at on both Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. Tons of family fun. You can rent everything from cottages to jet skis. 4th of July is so amazing here as well. The entire sky all around is full of fireworks.

Always a great time, getting away from it all but still being on the grid. We personally enjoy camping off the main road but there are campgrounds littered across the park with hook ups and other amenities.
