pros:If you want to be a teacher, this job is for you. If you don't want to be in education, don't make it difficult for yourself. I love the students. They are what make me stay.
The teachers here are dedicated and focused on changing the dynamic within the school. They are the glue that holds the school together. But,they do not have the foundation of support from admin to keep the school structured. The teachers here are amazing and devoted to these students.
Cons:There are many things that are tried to be implemented for the better but, not given enough planning time for it to be properly executed.
The students are not held accountable for their actions and given the opportunity to decide when to be in class and when not to. Tutors on the other hand are not as protected as students and written up based of personal judgement. For example, students are supposed to be in uniform every day. The same students decide to not wear their uniform every day and end up spending the day with admin than being in class. A Tutor out of uniform/dress code will be given an instance for it.
Another main con is that there are more rewards for bad behavior than for students who deserve it.

Advice:There are major changes that need to happen. This school has only been open for 3 years so there is still a lot of growth needing to be done. The admin staff needs to grow and and be on the same page across the board from teachers, tutor and admin. My experience at this school has been full of ups & downs. There have been good days with my students and other days I watch situations unfold and wonder how is this even allowed. With all honesty in hopes of this review being used as constructive criticism, I see the goal and end point this school is pushing towards but, it takes time.

There was another comment on this page that said something along the lines like they give the trouble makers a pat on the back which is oh so true. They give them a pat on the back and keep making excuses for them which is ashamed. What really are you teaching this children!!!! When I went to orientation for this school i was blown away of course I now know that was the bells and whistles that were pulled out in order to SELL this school. In some ways I regret sending my child to this school and on the other hand I don't. I can say that my child has blossomed, but it's certainly NOT from what's being done at Great Oaks. If their acceptance into the school was more rigorous I don't think there would be any problem with who they accept, but since it's not they allow anyone to become a student. Including those right out of Ferris with Gun Charge...smh! When I heard this from ANOTHER parent I couldn't believe my ears...really, so this is what we're doing Great Oaks. One things for sure, two things for certain MY CHILD WILL NOT BE ATTENDING NEXT YEAR!
Alot of the teachers are first year teachers or straight out of college so they don't really know how to handle these children. Hell if their parents don't know how to handle them then how can we expect a school to. The teachers and tutors that I have met are great at what they do, but I kinda feel sorry for them because it's almost as if they are winging it too.
