The Oak Hill Cemetery

A beautiful cemetery with graves and mausolea going back a couple centuries. Fairly walkable, but some paths are sloping and have loose gravel, so might be a challenge for those with mobility issues. If you’re lucky like we were, you might see some of the deer that live in the cemetery!

Oak Hill has hundreds of years of history and beauty located in historic Georgetown, next to Rock Creek. There aren't many more beautiful, well maintained places I've seen to rest loved ones in peace. It's a true sanctuary.

Beautiful and serene. Of all the nice places, this was the only one good enough for my dear mother. Peaceful, cool breeze, and quietly away from major highways (keeps the noise down). Check out Dial Murray Funeral home for information on purchasing lots at $1000 each, perceptual graveyard.

This cemetery is beautiful. I came here to take a walk and look at the old tombstones.

This is a DC hidden gem. One of the most beautiful cemetery’s I have seen, with rolling hills and pathways up and down them.

A notable grave is that of William Thos. Carroll. Lincoln’s 11y/o son, Willie, was temporarily laid there after he died in 1862. The president reportedly visited and even took the boy out of his casket there to mourn.

George Saunders wrote a book loosely based on this, called Lincoln in the Bardo.

Anyway, this gravestone is one that is closest to the river/highway in the back of the cemetery to the left corner.

My folks were buried there in 1982. I grew up in DC, and of all the places I have ever been, anywhere, Oak Hill is the most lovely little world all unto itself, overlooking the Parkway. History, nature, architecture, gardens, statues, all the markers, with all their stories, and above all else, beauty and peace. Please respect this wonderful, special place.

A beautiful place to walk through in the Fall.

Beautiful, if not oddly asymmetrically so. Some parts are gorgeously landscaped, and others have the timeworn charm of an older cemetery. It's easy to get turned around if you go off on the less kept side paths (which is necessary to see the full width of this place).

Beautiful to behold. Our ancestors knew how to design and build a graveyard. Now you no longer want to visit the deceased but get in and get out.

On the hill next to Rock Creek. It's a cemetery.... what can you say?. It's a good to place to go to think about life (and death).

This is by far the best cemetery I visited and it is my favorite of all cemeteries.
