Beautiful hike in the snow!!! Wish I had pictures of the spring water coming down the rocks! One of the most beautiful streams I have ever seen. The walk to the "bottom" of the stream is very easy. Hiking from the bottom up to the spot the water comes out of the mountain is a bit treacherous. When there is only a couple of inches of snow. We watched three people fall down. Two of them had walking pegs.

Go early in the year when the water is flowing, there isn't dust, and the spring is actually periodic. This is such a great, simple hike for families with small kids. And you'll enjoy some true beauty of Wyoming.

Well, the parking lot isn't much to see--a dirt lot at the end of dirt road with a vault toilet. But the short hike up to Periodic Spring is well worth the effort! It's probably only 3/4 of a mile from the parking lot to the top..a bit of a steep climb. Periodic Springs is one of the few places in the world where geological forces push the water out of the mountain at a high rate of speed, and then will suddenly shut off for several minutes at time. Worth seeing if you're in the Afton area.
