Heart of Gold is all that comes to mind when I think of the two mechanics that own this place. When a mechanic takes money out of his own pocket to fix my finance's Jeep that is truly something unheard of. And this was me and my fiance's first time going to Toms Auto in Middle Island. When my fiance and I pulled up to the shop we realized that they were about to close. We brought in the car because it was about to break down. We had no appointment and we said that we only have $200 left to our names, in our wallet to pay them. Until we get another paycheck from our jobs again.
My fiance and I love paycheck to paycheck, barely getting by😥. But after the owner mechanic looked at our Jeep he knew instantly what was wrong with it and said that we could NOT even drive it home. That's how dangerous it was to drive. The owner mechanic said to us, "I'm going to stay after closing time and I'm going to fix it right now. We couldn't believe he was staying after just to fix our Jeep. Then after he fixed it, then it was time to pay. It came to $450 total. Which was a great deal because Goodyear quoted over $600. Even with the deal he gave us we still only had $200 on us and no credit cards, nothing. Not a penny more until my fiance and I get our paychecks which was six days away. So I figured that they would hold onto the Jeep until we had the money to pay the remaining $250. Instead he said look I'll take whatever cash you have on you now, which was $200, which was less than half of what we owed. The owner mechanic assured us and said he knew how it is to struggle financially especially on Long Island NY. He said he likes to help others in need because he's been in financial hardship in the past. He said God blesses him so he blesses others. He said to come back whenever we can and to just give him the other $200 that we owed. Instead of the $250 we owed, he just said he would cut the $50 off and make it straight $200 even.
But all in all, We couldn't believe that he just stayed after closing time to do a $450 job on our jeep and he accepted just the $200 that we had. Instead of closing shop and rushing home to relax, he instead chose to help us instead❤🙏❤
We thanked him and we were in shock. What mechanic does $450 of work and car parts for $200 pay. Basically we got $250 of work and car parts for free. He said only if you guys have the money, then to come back and give him just $200 instead of the $250. And he even said that if you really don't have it not to worry. So next Friday when my fiance got his paycheck, my fiance went in with the $250 and said here I owe this to you and the owner mechanic was amazed that we came back to pay him. He said. He has done that to others because he felt bad that they didn't have enough to pay but all the others never came back to pay him the rest of what they owed. Hse has a heart of gold. No mechanic that is out there would even let a $1 slide. They are all money hungry and want the absolute full amount. Let alone even giving work done for free! They are amazing here and all have strong morals and respect which is hard to find nowadays. They live by God's commandments that's for sure. God bless them❤

These guys are great! They take true care of your car, and the price is hard to beat. I would bring any of my cars here, not just my classic

the best! called them last minute to get back rotors and brake pads changed, they stayed open for me as a courtesy even though i was a first time customer! reasonably priced and amazing customer service

The guy behind the counter is a genius. He's one of the best looking people I've ever seen. He is an amazing guy, and he's modest too.

All the comments that say this place is bad are lies. They are the most honest mechanics I ever encountered. I went their once to get my car fixed. I was happy with the experience. Then a month later I had hit a pot hole and experienced some damage and one of the tubes under the hood was leaking fluid into the transmission and it caused the transmission to malfunction. I was broke and I didn't get my paycheck for another 5 days so I was freaking out. I brought it back to this place just to get an estimate on what needed to be done. The mechanic quoted around $250 it was. So I said okay I'll be back here Friday to get this fixed. Mind you they were about to close He said no you won't. I'm going to fix this right now I can't let you drive like this. He said I gave him a good tip last time I saw him and he appreciates people who appreciate him and his workers. He sent the young mechanic out to AutoZone to buy the tube thing When the young one came back they took out the old tube and put a new one. Filled the fluids. Wiped down the transmission because it was full of gunk. And they reset the car and did tune up. He said pay me when you can. I couldn't believe a mechanic that I barely knew was doing this for me. So he let me go not knowing where I lived or anything. When I came back Friday with the money he said I didn't think you were going to come back and pay me. I said it's only right you did right by me. Now I found myself a wonderful mechanic. Good hearted people. They would not scam anybody. He took the chance on fixing my car for me not knowing if he was even going to get paid for it. I'm still in awe about the whole situation. Things like that don't happen nowadays. Most mechanics want a quick buck. These two mechanics that own this business just want to do right by their community. They practice good old fashion values and morals. You don't see much of any of that nowadays. It's very rare. God bless them and their family

I had to do an inspection. They got me in pretty quickly. Car passed, they didn't try to fleece me, very honest!

First - make sure you pull into the correct side-road to get you to Tom's, it's quite a ways off of Middle Country Road.

Tom is AWESOME. I called day-of to see if he could take a look at my 20 year old car, and he got me in on a Saturday afternoon. Came out and inspected it with us, showed me a thing or two, mentioned that the discovered issue was nothing pressing (we were on the Island visiting family) and told us what to do when we got back home. Knowledgeable, professional, personable - if you've got an issue, come see Tom!
