Hanaya Sushi

The restaurant looked closed, but I’m glad we went in anyway. The owner was such a kind man and dinner was great! The portions were huge and the extras like the edamame, crab salad, seaweed salad were so thoughtful. We got the shrimp tempura roll (favorite) and spicy scallop roll (the best I’ve had in YEARS) as well as spicy tuna and California. All were huge and delicious! We planned on ordering six rolls, but the owner said four would fill us up (party of 3) and he was right! We are stuffed! He gave us some candy to end the meal and sent my daughter home with fresh flowers. Will definitely come again next time we are in the area!

Huge sushi rolls. Langostine was interesting and very tasty. The restaurant is a fascinating one man operation. If the restaurant is too full he'll let you know that your food will be a long while if you plan to order. Luckily I grabbed a table when he wasn't too busy and everything felt relaxed. He also gave a bag of Japanese candy after the meal. Good experience.

Such great service! I ordered just to get takeout and the man who helped me was so sweet, included extras like edamame and seaweed salad. Most places just toss the food in a box and call it a day, but he made a nice presentation. It’s the little things that really stick out, I will 1000% come again!

This place is awesome, the owner is so kind and friendly. I went a few months ago and was so kind. We had questions and he answered them and had such a great energy vibe. Seems like a one man show so you have to understand if it's "slow" but I mean what do you expect. It 's one guy so if you can get past that and put away your preferences for quick fast food and embrace that good food takes time. Then you'll really really enjoy this place.
He also gave us Japanese candy for free which was awesome.

I ordered two trays of sushi for a work event. The owner helped me estimate how much to order. The presentation was lovely. More importantly, the sushi was delicious! The group devoured the sushi and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hanaya Sushi is A1!

Guy who runs the shop is very kind and generous, and makes DELICIOUS sushi. Prices are very reasonable, and he always gives a little extra to an order. Typically, he adds a few of the items listed: sashimi, rice, edamame, seaweed salad, imitation crab, a few California rolls, drink, or candy. Today with my Philadelphia roll order he gifted me seaweed salad, edamame, 4 extra California rolls, and a can of oolong tea! One of the best sushi spots I've been to, couldn't recommend this spot enough.

A very delicious spot for sushi. I ordered takeout: sashimi combo, salmon rolls, and nigiri. The fish was fresh and the rolls were meticulously done by the owner himself. Price to quantity/quality ratio is so much more reasonable compared to other sushi places. The owner is also very kind and welcoming — his hospitality reminded me a lot of the hospitality we’d have in Japan. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning.

One of my favorite places in SD! The Chirashi is of such a high value (with more than 20 sashimi and all are very fresh). Very tasty. You can feel that the chef wants to feed every customer with love: the to-go box is filled with Japanese snacks and beverages, reminds me of how my mom prepared bento box for me. Thank you for such a heartwarming memory!

I was in the mood for sushi, this place was near my hotel and had good reviews. I love yellowtail and ordered 12 pieces. The fish was excellent, great quality, and the individual pieces were generous, much larger than you typically get. Plus, the chef gave me an extra piece, Seaweed salad, crab salad, and steamed edamame. All of this was bonus given and not asked for. That’s service and generosity above and beyond. The whole meal was just delicious. I’m definitely coming back next time I’m in San Diego, no question!

First time visiting this place and I'm not disappointed... I'm disappointed that I did not find it sooner. The owner is so kind and makes you feel welcomed. Currently take out is the only option but hope to visit this place when it opens for indoor dine in because the vibe feels really good. The food was very delicious and fresh. Ordered the spicy tuna roll and yellowtail sushi and it was made with great care and flavor. I will definitely return when I crave sushi to this location!

I only ordered a California roll but my takeout bag looked so big! The chef packed edamame, apple, candy, seaweed salad, and crab meat for me. It made my day!
The chef was also the only one working so I am very impressed by how kind and thoughtful he is. Please go and support him! The roll was also delicious!!

This is the best sushi place I’ve been in years! Visiting Dell Mar e we drove 15 just to come eat here, all the reviews were so preserved o couldn’t miss it and they were no wrong. The owner is indeed super sweet and caring! It’s take out only as of right now and he was so kind he have is cooled water bottles for us to wait in the car -at no charge! He made the best - hands down- the most amazing sashimi salad... tons of fish -all kinds - and delicious dressing! It’s was epic!
The rolls were ordered were also super delish... tempura shrimp, spicy shrimp, the best Philadelphia and amazing California roll, plus seaweed salad, miso soup, edamame, candy and mini Water! So good I’m sad i don’t live closer! I wish him endless health and prosperity for his business!

Really lovely experience! Cozy on an early Saturday evening, very kind service with lots of little bonus dishes! Love the kani salad, in a little side dish and especially on a roll!

My favorite sushi place in San Diego. The sashimi plate was fresh and super good, especially salmon and escolar. I recommend to come for dinner because it's not busy and the atmosphere is nice.

AMAZING. My expectations were low because Hanaya is located in a strip mall-esque complex in a very industrial area, but I was blown away. The chirashi bowl was extremely generously proportioned and the fish was delicious, and the owner was so nice and included with the order: miso soup, edamame, sparkling water, fruit, Japanese candy, and face masks. Would definitely return.

Excellent veggie rolls and friendly service while you charged your Tesla. 😋😄 The Sushi chef has very unique and creative presentation to everything he serves. The food is delicious with very nice portions for an unbeatable price. Highly recommended.

Any skepticism I had of ordering sushi from an industrial strip mall was immediately eliminated when I arrived. Hee, the owner, takes great passion into preparing his food, goes above and beyond, and cares about his customers and restaurant. Be patient and kind. Wait times can be up to ~30-40 min depending on day/time - he is operating solo and prioritizes quality > speed. Best to call ahead.

Wow wow wow! This place is the definition of above and beyond exceptional customer service. The owner adores his customers and it shows in the free extras provided in every order. No one does this any more. So many businesses are worried about $ especially during the pandemic. This owner has not let that affect his service. Amazing food as well made with love!
